Before he knew it, Sierra came to a halt by the side of the road. She wound down her window as he pulled alongside.

“There you go.” Her hand came up and she pointed across the road to a small, squat, white building hunkering on the corner of the intersection. More of a revamped house than a special-built police station. But then, many county stations were exactly that. “Police headquarters on KI.”

It took him a second to realize KI was short for Kangaroo Island. He checked it out before turning to answer. The building was lit up with a bright spotlight on the front steps, and all the windows glowed from within.

“Thanks,” he said through the window.

“No probs,” she replied. “There’s a carpark at the side.”

He nodded, already having noticed the fenced-off area. There were a series of closed garages at the back, where he assumed the squad cars lived.

“Looks like someone is still working,” she said, glancing at the well-lit building.

“Yeah, Don said he’d wait for me to arrive. He’s going to take me over to a guesthouse they have lined up for me to stay in, until I can get a place of my own.” Reed put his hand in his pocket and stared back at the police station, searching for the feel of his lucky penny, sitting warm, familiar and comforting.

“Good luck,” she called, already winding up her window.

“Thanks again,” he shouted. It sounded inane and severely lacking. He wanted to say something bright and witty. Tell her he hoped to see her again. But the moment was gone, and she drove off, red taillights fading into the dark.

He stared after them until she turned a corner and the street was empty, still playing with the penny in his pocket. Time to go and meet his new boss. Reed took in a deep breath and drove into the carpark.
