The drive to my house is quiet. Aurora says nothing. She plays with her fingers while sitting in the passenger seat.
“Here’s what’s going to happen, Aurora.” She jumps a little in her seat, startled by the sudden noise. She takes a deep breath, then turns to look at me.
“We’re going to my house. First, I’m going to bring you to my bathroom where you’ll take a shower and clean up. Then we’re going to have dinner together.” Aurora nods, and I continue.
“After dinner, we’re going to my bedroom and I’m going to kiss you.” Aurora’s breath hitches, and I smile to myself. If I get that reaction only talking about kissing, I can’t wait until she hears the rest.

We get to a stoplight and I look at her.

I lead her to the bathroom and turn on the tub. There’s a leftover smoky smell from the auction house covering her and I don’t like it. I pull out vanilla shampoo and body wash. I put a towel on the counter, then make my way to the door to give her some privacy.
“Mr. Devlin?”
“Please, call me Ford.”
“Um, Ford. I just wanted to say…thank you. I guess considering you bought me instead of taking me to the police station I should be grateful.”
I walk forward and tilt her chin up to look at me.
“I meant what I said. I want to help you. You don’t need to be grateful. Just know you’re safe with me.” I kiss her on the forehead. It takes all my willpower to walk out of the bathroom, close the door, and walk away.
