Her heart was about to explode out of her chest. Was that what he meant? ‘Alex? Why are you calling me?’

‘We slept together a month ago.’

Her pulse gushed. ‘And?’ The word was a thready whisper.

‘If there were any consequences from that night—’

The purpose for his call then became crystal clear. She closed her eyes and shook her head. ‘There weren’t.’

A pause crackled down the phone line and then a rumbling noise. ‘I’m glad. Then it’s over.’

Bitterness filled her throat. ‘Was it really so awful?’

She waited, the silence pulsing between them. ‘Yes, agape. It really was.’

He disconnected the call and Theresa was glad they’d had this conversation over the phone, because that way he didn’t get to see the tears sparkling in her eyes. She stared across the room, resolve hardening in the pit of her stomach.

Stavros’s death had pulled her apart, and the night with Alex had added to that, but she refused to be a victim. She refused to let her parents continue to treat her like a baby. This was her life, and she had to live it, she had to reach out for what she wanted with both hands—and what she wanted, more than anything, was to forget Alexandros existed. To forget the perfection of his hands on her body, to erase him completely from her mind and life.

Stubbornness ran through her veins, and in that moment she was glad. She’d never think of him again.
