‘And one day children of our own?’ he suggested carefully, as though he was surprised to find himself wanting that.

Bea felt the same—it was something she’d ruled out for so long, but now she knew what she wanted, and it was more than a life with Ares. It was a life with him and a family too, children who would grow up surrounded by their love. ‘Definitely.’ Her voice cracked a little. ‘You know, I’ve spent all my life feeling unwanted, and like I didn’t belong anywhere.’ She shook her head wistfully. ‘I just didn’t realise that the place I was meant to be, and the man I was meant to be with, weren’t in my life yet.’

‘I’ve been waiting for you,’ he agreed quietly, ‘and I didn’t realise it either.’

A powerful look of understanding passed between them.

‘I’m taking this as a yes,’ he said as he dropped his head to hers.

‘Oh, it’s a yes,’ she sighed, kissing him slowly. ‘In fact, it’s a thousand of them, and then some.’

The sunset was spectacular once again that evening, but neither of them noticed the colours in the sky. That didn’t matter, though. There was a lifetime of sunsets awaiting them—every evening for the rest of their lives.
