“We aren’t going to lose her.”

“He’s right, broki. We’ve done impossible shit before—this doesn’t even sound that hard.”

“And it won’t be,” Wyatt said, wanting to instill some confidence in a still-frightened Mustang. “We’ve got the literal blueprints, the location of the hideout, and we have the element of surprise. Leonidas is going to think he’s completely safe, which means his guard will be completely down.”

Mustang sucked in a deep breath. She put her hands in the pocket of her jean shorts, dropping her head. “Fine. I’m going to go drive around the city, try and get my mind right and maybe reach out to some contacts. Maybe someone knows something that can help us.”

“Perfect,” Roman said, a clap of his hands drawing their attention. “I’m going to the condo, where Wyatt and I can work on finalizing a plan. Bang Bang, stay with Doc tonight. Is Tor still with Phantom?”

Mustang nodded. “That’s where we left them. I don’t know if they’ve killed each other yet.” She shrugged, taking a pair of keys out of her pocket. The boat had been rented by a fake British couple going off on a honeymoon ride. That British couple was set to disappear, and the boat would make it back to the rental company with the bill paid off and a tip added on top.

“Great. I want them working together tonight. Tor can work on the cyber side of things, figure out if there’s any way to take down the security systems and to control the gate that leads down into the hideout. Phantom can work with him on figuring out the stealthiest access point.” Roman took out his phone from the pocket of his uniform pants. “Let me just send them a message real quick.” His fingers flew over the screen, finishing a few moments later before asking Wyatt for a copy of the photos he’d taken.

Roman sent his message, dropping his phone back into his pants. Exhaustion slipped onto his expression. Wyatt could see it behind the normally bright green eyes, a shadow that appeared set to consume everything in its path, only fought off by a decent night of rest.

Which none of them appeared to be getting anytime soon.

“Alright, that sound like a plan to you guys?” Roman looked around, likely seeing the same exhaustion reflected back at him. Wyatt could feel it down in his bones, a cold chill that dragged down his eyelids, dulling his already scattered thoughts.

“As good a plan as any,” Bang Bang answered. Wyatt could tell he was working overtime to keep a smile on his face. He wasn’t doing a good job of hiding the worries that they were all feeling.

“Where do we meet tomorrow?” Mustang asked.

“Let’s meet at the Bayside docks. We can rent another boat there and take that down to the Keys. We won’t hit any traffic that way.”

Mustang nodded, lips pursed tight. She didn’t say goodbye to any of them, just lifted a nearly limp hand into the air and walked off, kicking up sand as she left. Wyatt hated to see her like this and more so hated the reason why she was like this. He couldn’t help but think about what could be happening to Mimic. The variations of pain and torture twisted his stomach and made his heart physically hurt like it was shocked with an electrical probe and forced to restart.

It made him sick, and he had no doubt that was only exponentially magnified for Mustang. That was her partner, her other half. Wyatt had experienced the same excruciating pain when Roman was locked up, but at least there he could trick himself into thinking Roman was relatively safe.

There was no tricking the mind when it came to the amount of danger Mimic was in. No amount of sugarcoating or hope would make it better, either. The only thing that could fix this was getting Mimic out of there as soon as they could.

Roman turned to Bang Bang. “You okay with everything?”

Bang Bang nodded, the smile faltering even further. He opened his arms and wrapped both of them in one of the tightest bear hugs Wyatt had ever received. He shut his eyes and hugged them back.

“Night, brokis. I’ll see you all tomorrow, bright and early.”

That left Roman and Wyatt alone on the dark beach, the sun having fallen completely from the sky. Miami Beach was a bright city, especially at night, but a handful of stars still managed to break through the light pollution. Roman put an arm around Wyatt’s side and pulled him close. They both looked up at the same blinking stars, Wyatt not finding the usual peace he felt whenever he admired the night sky. This time, it was unnerving, the dark expanse of the universe stretching out above them while the similarly dark expanse of the ocean reached out in the other direction. It was almost as if he were staring at a black hole, and he could feel himself slipping further and further inside of it.
