“Ah, so she decided you aren’t some one-night stand, huh?”

“I think she’s still wondering if I’m a wannabe actor who laid in wait for you to come along. I planted myself in small-town Louisiana on the off chance that a Hollywood hottie would come into town. Come to think of it, I probably set up the whole mud thing so you would have to save me.”

Brynn moved in, tilting her head up so she could look into his eyes. “She’s paranoid because of a couple of incidents that hurt me. She doesn’t seem to understand that I learned from those incidents. I’m much better at picking out the bad guys now.”

“How do you know I’m not using you?” Somehow all that tension he’d been feeling had evaporated the minute he’d realized she was here.

She grinned up at him. “Because you’re my Deputy Major. How do you know I’m not using you for sex?”

“I don’t.” He felt a smile slide over his face. “I have to hope the gorgeous star wants me for more than my body.”

She went on her toes, and the grin on her face made him feel warm, like the world was a softer place with her in it. “It’s a pretty nice body. A girl could do worse.”

“You are damning me with faint praise, woman.” He dipped his head down and kissed her. “I might have to show you what else I can do.”

There was a screeching sound, and Brynn screamed and stepped back.

Major turned so he was in front of her. The sound was coming from the log, and he could have sworn he saw a tiny fist bunch up before disappearing inside. “I’ll call Zep and let him know we found the hideout.”

Brynn’s arms wound around his waist. “You do that. I’m going to hide behind you for a while. I think I’m glad I didn’t bring Duke with me. He might try to fight the raccoon.”

“Dolly would hide from the raccoon.” His darling dog wasn’t much of a fighter.

“It’s okay. Duke would protect her,” Brynn promised.

“You should stay out of Ally’s career.” A loud voice floated down from the pool area.

“And you should understand that you’re the reason she doesn’t have a career.”

Diane and Gavin were going at it again. If Brynn walked through there she would get caught up in it.

“Save me,” Brynn whispered.

He could do that. He leaned over and picked her up. “I’ll toss this phone your momma’s way. I promised when I wanted to get you alone, I’d pick you up and carry you away.”

“Oh, well, then we should talk, because my sister is at the cabin. She’s been there most of the morning.” Brynn’s arms went around his neck. “She was hiding in the front bathroom.”

He groaned. “We’re going to my place. I have a security system.”

He was going to need it.

chapter fourteen

Brynn looked out across the park and let the heavenly scent of fried food waft over her. All around, people were mingling, eating food from vendors and drinking beer and wine and strawberry lemonade. She recognized some of the people walking around the fairgrounds as crew who’d come in early.

“Hey, Brynn!” A costumer she’d worked with before waved her way.

“Hi, Pam. It’s good to see you again,” Brynn returned. “Already hard at work?”

The pretty brunette nodded even as she walked beside another woman, their hands threaded together. “Sure am. Everything looks great. We’ve got a fitting tomorrow afternoon. See you then.”

Brynn smiled but there was a knot in her stomach at the words. Time was moving so fast. She’d already done hair and makeup tests and the initial costume fittings back in LA. This was her final fitting. It wasn’t an elaborate costume like some historical film. Her main costume for this movie was awfully close to what Major wore to work every day. Of course, he made khaki sexy. She wasn’t sure how good she looked in it.

“Was that Pamela Jackson?” Her mom moved in behind her. She was wearing a designer dress and five-inch heels to a crawfish festival.

“It certainly looked like her.” Gavin had driven them all into town when Brynn had asked for a ride to the festival.

She should have called a Guber. At least then she wouldn’t have ended up with an escort. Just whiplash and regret because the shock-absorption on that golf cart wasn’t the best.

“Good. She’s excellent,” her mother said approvingly. “Now, what is this party about? Are they welcoming the film crew into town?”

“No, this is a crawfish festival. They’re in season from January to July,” Gavin replied. “Many local parishes have festivals in late spring because this is when the crawfish have reached maturity. That means they’re at their largest and are good to eat.” Gavin seemed to realize they were both staring at him. He shrugged. “I study. When Brynn said she wanted to come I used this wonderful thing called the Internet. It’s for more than shopping.”
