How ironic is it that I could probably convince any female on this campus to help me with the exception of her?

I blink back to the present when Audrey settles on the bed next to me and strokes her talented fingers across my chest.

“You know that I’m a good study buddy,” she whispers.

I almost snort. I’ve been down this road too many times with her before. The girl is good at a lot of things. Many of which have nothing to do with academics. I know exactly what will happen if I agree to her special brand of assistance.

And that won’t help at all.

Even though it’s tempting to push aside Comms and indulge in a little one-on-one time with the pretty blonde, passing this class isn’t an option for me.

I can’t afford to get benched.

Not even for a single game.

“I know you are, but this is something I have to do on my own.” Those are words I never expected to pop out of my mouth. Guess what they say is true—there really is a first time for everything.

She leans closer, pressing her breasts against my arm before staring at me through heavy-lidded eyes. “Are you sure? I could always hang out for moral support.”

“Maybe later, all right?”

The corners of her lips wilt as she gives me a full-on pout. “Promise?”

My brows draw together at the lispiness that bleeds through her voice which makes her sound suspiciously like a toddler. While some dudes might be into that kind of thing, I’m not one of them. Let’s save the babytalk for the actual babies.

“Umm, yeah. Sure.”

When a few minutes tick by and she doesn’t budge from the mattress, I clear my throat. I don’t want to be rude, but this shit isn’t going to complete itself. And I’ve got practice in a couple of hours.

“Okay then…”

She nods before reluctantly rising to her feet. “I’ll be waiting.”

Great.

“Right in the living room,” she adds.

I point a finger at her. “Got it.”

“Just call me if you need anything.”

“Will do.”

By the time she reaches the door, I’m more than ready for her to leave. I almost groan when she hesitates, pressing one hand to her lips before lifting it in my direction.

When I remain still, unsure what she’s doing, she says, “Aren’t you going to catch the kiss and tuck it away for later?”

What the—

I hesitate before forcing my hand in the air before closing my fingers around absolutely nothing.

“Now tuck it away in your pocket for safekeeping,” she encourages.

I pretend to stuff the kiss into the front of my jeans.

She grins before fluttering her fingers at me and finally disappearing into the hallway. As soon as she’s gone, I spring from the bed and lock the door.

Sheesh.

For some reason, taco girl nudges her way into my brain, and I try to imagine her doing the same thing. Even the image is enough to make me chuckle. With a shake of my head, I return to what must be considered one of the circles of hell. And if it’s not, it certainly should be.

LOLA

My head is on a constant swivel as I pull into the parking lot closest to the athletic center. It’s only nine o’clock in the morning, and already the place is jampacked.

I release a frustrated breath.

Had I been smart, I would have hauled ass out of bed an hour earlier and gotten here before the morning rush. Even if that meant working in the library for an hour or so, it would be totally worth avoiding this congestion.

Like a shark, I cruise up and down the rows before spotting a car that’s leaving. I stomp on the gas, hoping to beat everyone else and get there first.

Score!

I shift the gear into park and wait for the shiny BMW to leave. As soon as they’re out of the way, I pull forward. I’m halfway into the space when another vehicle slams into me from behind, jolting the car forward. My eyes widen as the seatbelt snaps, restraining my upper body from crashing into the steering wheel. My heart thunders until it feels like it’ll explode from my chest. The sound of it roars in my ears, drowning out everything else.

Aw hell.

This is exactly what I don’t need.

I shift into park before unclipping the belt with shaking fingers and slamming out of the door. Whoever just hit me is about to get an earful. Except, as soon as I stalk around the side, tires squeal and the vehicle takes off, speeding away.

“Hey!” I raise both arms in an are you kidding me gesture before grinding to a halt in the middle of the row just in time to see a dark truck with tinted-out windows swing around the corner and disappear with a roar of its engine.

Even though it’s too late, I yell, “Get your ass back here!”
