“As I have told you before, Mr. Kelly, my name is Miss Murray.”

“Mr. Kelly, in the dormitories, among the men, you may speak as you like, but we prefer you to observe a few formalities out here,” Baron said.

Kelly looked vastly amused. His gray-blue eyes crinkled at the corners. “Miss Murray then. Am I on the list?”

“Yes, Mr. Kelly. I have you right here.” He moved closer to peer at her clipboard and with a gasp she jerked it away. “Sir, I beg your pardon.”

“You have it, la—Miss Murray.”

Oh, she wanted to throw the clipboard at his head! How dare he try to hurry her along? He was the one causing the delays. “You are in—”

“D Building?”

She glowered at him, but he just blinked at her with an innocent expression. Baron made a sound that sounded suspiciously like a laugh covered up as a cough.

“D Building,” she said as though Kelly had not spoken. “Bed four.”

“Good. And who do I report to?”

Completely exasperated now, she lowered her clipboard and stared at him. “If you would please stop interrupting, I would be happy to tell you.”

“I do apologize, but I do think you could have made this process tidier.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Oh, you do, do you?”

Baron cleared his throat, clearly a warning to the Irishman. A warning he didn’t heed.

“Sure and you could have said, All the men to Building D and the ladies inside the farmhouse. Then these gentlemen here could have said which of us he wanted to see afterward.”

“Mr. Kelly, I do not need your assistance to do my job, thank you very much.”

“Just trying to help.”

“Don’t.” She lifted her clipboard. “Report to Mr. Fog.” She drew a dark, thick line through his name. “Thank you.” And, again, she gave him her back and strode away. She would have been pleased to put all other Irishmen behind her as easily. Unfortunately, the letter in her desk came to mind, and she couldn’t forget its ominous warning.
