“I’m a thief and a gambler and a drunk.”

She shook her head as she unfastened his neckcloth. “Not anymore, and don’t say you’ll go back to those...habits. You won’t.” She unbuttoned the neck of his shirt. “You’re not like my father in that way.” She pulled him up, and he caught her waist as she yanked the shirt over his head.

“But you think I am like your father.”

“He was charming and handsome, and I loved him. But when he drank, his dark side...”

“I’m not him. Well”—he grinned—"I am charming and handsome, but I don’t drink any longer. And even if I did, I never hurt anyone when I was foxed. I’d never hurt you.”

She swallowed, and then she kissed him again. This time the kiss was slow and deep, and he was left breathless. He managed to pull away again, but his resolve was slipping. “I don’t want you to regret giving me your innocence. One day you may marry a man who deserves you—”

“I’ll never marry, and I deserve you. I want you, Callahan.” She kissed him then pulled back abruptly. “Unless you think you will regret...”

He chuckled. “Not a chance, lass.” In a sudden movement, he flipped her onto the bed and covered her with his body. She wanted him, and if one day she saw him as a mistake, well, at least he could be certain she thought of that mistake fondly.

He’d never see taking her to bed as a mistake. He still didn’t know what he’d done to deserve her. That feeling was heightened when he stripped off her dress and her underclothing, and she lay beside him in nothing more than a thin shift. Her hair was spread on the bed, her lips swollen from his kisses, and she held out her arms to him. “Kiss me, Callahan.”

He did.
