“I’m still in my nightgown.”

He’d been afraid she’d say that. It was short enough to show her ankles above her boots and the material thin enough that when it blew against her legs, he could see the shape even in the relative darkness. “I hate to leave you out here, lass, but I think it’s best.”

He spotted a large stack of unidentifiable cargo waiting to be loaded into the hold of a ship. It was covered and secured by canvas. No one was guarding it at the moment, so he found a shadowy corner and pushed her down.

“Stay here and keep hidden. This shouldn’t take me long.” She nodded, and he caught her chin with two fingers. “I mean it, Bridget. Stay put this time.”

“You ought to be thanking me for saving you.”

“You want me thanks?”

She gave him a defiant look and twisted her chin out of his grasp.

He touched her cheek and brought her gaze back to him. “Thank you.” He bent and kissed her gently. Heat immediately flickered between them, and he forced himself to end the kiss before he forgot what he was about. “I’ll be back shortly.”

He rose and started away.

“Don’t die,” she called after him.

“You won’t be so lucky, lass.” At least, he hoped not.
