“Mmm. You’re right. It’s delicious, but….”

Oh no, fuck. He doesn’t like it. My heart sinks. I bite my lip in fear of him yelling at me and telling me I need to do it again. Or worse, will he tell Dominic I’m not a good enough baker for this much responsibility?

“But what?” I barely whisper, too scared to look and see who’s around us. He’s leaning so close, his breath floats against my mouth.

“It doesn’t taste as good as you.”

I gasp. Those words barely register before his lips are on mine. His hands come to my face as his tongue claims mine. We move together for a few short seconds before I freak out and push him off me.

Catching my breath, I notice for the first time we’re alone. I touch my lips, missing his rough kiss instantly.

“Did I do something wrong?”

His face is a mask of concern. Of course, it is. I pushed him away. I shake my head apologetically, gripping his shirt so he doesn’t leave.

“I thought everyone was still here.”

“I would never jeopardize your authority. I’ve been waiting for the last…” he looks down at his watch “…five hours and twenty minutes to kiss you again. You were in the chocolate zone over there. I didn’t want to bother you, so once our half of the kitchen was spotless, I let the gang go.”

I nod, realizing just how in the zone I was. I didn’t realize everyone had left or that the sun had set. I do, however, notice the scar on Dane’s chin. The freckle on his neck and the tight fit of his dress pants.

As we worked, I’d catch him glancing, each time making me swoon, his eyes always drifting down to my stomach.

This is crazy. Am I naive to believe all his promises and this beautiful illusion he’s painting me?

“What are we doing?” I ask in disbelief.

“Going to dinner. I made some calls.” He cautiously pushes closer. The fact he’s being timid at all makes me laugh. Dane takes it as a good sign, wraps his arms around my waist, and gently pulls me closer.

“I would be honored if you would have dinner with me tonight, Veronica Ford. I’m crazy about you, and I’m dying to prove myself.”

“You mean anxious to make a baby, horndog,” I joke, but his face sobers.

“No, I don’t mean it like that. I mean, for the first time in my life, I’ve found a woman who is both interesting and beautiful. Who’s laugh makes me smile, and I don’t fucking smile often.”

We both laugh at that. “Ronnie, you’re perfect. Any man would be lucky to hold you, yet here I am, your gorgeous body under my care. You’re far more patient than me and have the kindest heart. I can’t wait to make you a mom.”

“This is crazy,” I say in awe.

“Let’s go eat fancy as fuck food we didn’t have to make. Then I’ll take you home and rub your feet.”

“That is the sexiest thing I have ever heard in all my life.” My tone is deadly serious, but he cracks up laughing at me. I don’t mind. He looks so happy; I don’t want him to stop.
