“And the opportunity to make your own decision after you hear it.”

“I choose you.”

“Simon, you can’t know that until you have the facts.”

“I can. You’re it, love. That’s really all I need to know. Well, that and that you feel the same about me.

“I do.”

“Which is why you left.”

“Yes.” He nods as if that was a foregone conclusion, and I can’t fault him for it because he’s right.

**Simon**

“Wait, you compared the size of your non-existent balls to his and declared him lacking?”

“Yeah. Perhaps not my finest moment.”

“We’ll agree to disagree on that, Bristol. I wish I could’ve seen his face.”

“Why? To punch it?”

I laugh, the thought having crossed my mind. But I know there’s more, the crux of the matter, and she needs to continue so thatwecan continue. “That’s neither here nor there.”

“Don’t think I haven’t noticed you didn’t deny it.” I grin, not in the least bothered she saw through me. “I’ll let it go for now, though.” Then she proceeds with her story, giving my ire other targets, and none of them are her.

She braces herself for it, though, as if she expects it. Not due to who I am but because she believes she deserves it. “Love, once we met, why did you keep coming back to me?” It’s a risky move, but I’m trying to prove a point. “Was it to get close to me?”

“Yes,” she immediately answers, not even taking a second to think about it. “I liked you. You made me feel…” She trails off as if she’s searching for the right word, only to shake her head and say, “No, that’s it. You made me feel.”

“Did you ever use our time together to snoop, ask probing questions in order to gain information on myself or my business, or to find dirt on me in any way?”

“No.”

“To which?” I push, even though I already know.

“All of them.”

“We’re done here,” I state. Unfortunately, she misunderstands me and the devastation on her face as she rises to her feet cracks my heart in two. “Baby, no. I meant with this discussion. You’ve told me everything I need to know and it has no bearing on us. Because make no mistake, there is an us. Has been since I saw you the first time you ran past my house. And yes, I’ve put together that those jaunts were designed to gain my attention. They worked, and I am eternally grateful for that.”

“I thought I was being noble, sacrificing my happiness to keep you safe.”

“What about my life leads you to believe it ever has been?”

I’ve got her there and she knows it, but my woman is not one to back down. “You would’ve done the same thing if the roles were reversed.”

“I would?” I definitely would, I’m just curious as to why she’s so confident of that.

“Because you’re a gentleman.”

“The things I want to do to you are far from gentlemanly.”

“Yet you haven’t don’t any of them. Why is that?”

“You weren’t ready.”

“Point proven. A true monster, as I know you see yourself, wouldn’t care about that. It wouldn’t matter to them. Nor would they seek redemption for the things they’ve done, that others have done in their name.”
