I laugh just imagining Jimmie at his size and weight trying to stand up to Creed. He wouldn’t have survived. I guess I need to talk to them tomorrow and make things right. I just don’t know if I will be able to trust them the way I did before this. I’ll just have to take it one day at a time. At least knowing that they're a part of this world, I don’t need to pretend anymore or keep as many secrets.

Arriving at school has my stomach in knots. I take a deep breath as I hit the top step of the stairs. Movement has me looking upand I see the solemn faces of Jimmie and Sinclair. Danika is talking away to Kai who is pretending to listen. I slowly walk across the path that leads to our table.

“Hey Danika, want to come for a walk with me? These guys need to talk. We can come up with strategies to win Joshua back.”

Her face lights up at his words and they both walk off. I take a seat opposite them and we all sit in silence. I’m not exactly sure what to say, the whole vibe is tense and slightly weird like I’m the new girl all over again sitting amongst a bunch of strangers.

“I’m so sorry,” Sinclair says, reaching out to take my hand and I instinctively pull it back. Hurt flashes across her face making me feel guilty.

“How about you explain it from the start?” I ask. Jimmie glances at Sinclair, then turns back to me and nods.

“I was sent here undercover last year. I can’t tell you why but meeting you was purely by accident. I was never forced to befriend you and everything has been real.”

“And do you have a team?” I question, hoping that everything he’s saying is the truth.

“I do. Betty in reception is part of my team. The other four assholes wouldn’t pass as high school students.”

“How are you old enough to not be in high school?” I ask and he smiles.

“I’m only eighteen, I’m just small. I graduated high school early; my team wasn’t exactly happy about that, but here I am now. I still really want to be your friend; I've never had a real friend before. No one takes me seriously except Betty, but sometimes I think that she just feels sorry for me.”

“And you?” I ask, turning to Sinclair. Guilt washes over her face and she tries to hide it with a tight smile.

“I don’t have a team, but my brother does. When I found out about this life I wanted in but it was too late to be put into a team. The role I’m being trained for is helping people who come in late transition into this life. I really do go to this school, Mr. Z wasn’t really happy that I had found out about some of the things that I did, but he decided to give me a shot. I found out that I would be assigned to you the day after I met with him. To be a friend and to make sure none of the G.O.D.S gave you a hard time. He wanted your transition to be smooth but the more I got to know you, the more that I wanted to be your friend. What we have is real,” she says, motioning between us. “I promise you that.”

“Please tell me that we’re good,” Jimmie asks. “I need you in my life.”

“Yeah, we’re good.”

I knew deep down there was a reason I hadn’t initially trusted Sinclair and now I know that I should always trust my gut. But I think now that everything's out in the open we can work on that and I may be a little suspicious that she is going back to Mr Z. But they were the first people here to be my friends, and they have kept secrets so it may take awhile to get back to normal but we will get there.

“Jimmie, was that really your mum that I met?” I ask.

“Yes. I don’t actually live there anymore since we have to live with our teams after we graduate, but she was just excited for me to have a girl in my room.”

We all laugh.

“And Sinclair, how much of what I do ends up told to Mr. Z?”

“None of our personal conversations, just my observations on how you were interacting with Hades and now Zeus. I’m willing to tell him whatever you want me to, as long as it’s believable. Kai filled me in a little on your situation with him and swore me to secrecy. Well, Chester and Creed did, those guys are scary. They want to see my weekly reports before I send them and I’m happy to show you in case he asks you any questions.”

The bell rings, the chime echoing throughout the patio. We all stand and head to our form class. This class is the worst of the day, it brings back memories of Boston’s moody ass or Davis’ questionable eyes, Laughn’s playfulness, Marlow’s laid back personality and Case with his damn jaw tattoo that I thought was the most ridiculous thing that I had even seen until I learned about its meaning.

Now I’m stuck with a handler as a best friend, another best friend who is part of Olympia and five team members posing as teachers. There is something going on in these walls and I really hate not knowing what it is. So many teams in one place and here just for me. It doesn’t make sense, unless there is a huge threat on my life. I know Mr. Z tells me it’s his brother, but if he really thought he was a threat he would have him killed.

That's it. I've had enough of not knowing what's going on and being left in the dark. It's time I got some answers and my team treats me like I was one of them, otherwise this is all going to fall to pieces before we even get started.

“Can you tell the teacher that I have gone to see the guidance officer?” I ask Sinclair. She raises a brow in a silent question, but I shake my head, not wanting to elaborate, so she just nods. I turn back around and head to Brennan’s office. I have to go through administration and Betty is currently sitting at the counter. I had wondered when I first enrolled as to why an employee would look at a student the way she did and now it makes sense. She also had an instant dislike for me and that’s because she views Jimmie as hers.

I decide that I'm going to take control of this situation before it becomes a bigger issue. “Miss Smith, what can I do for you?”

“I want us to start again, I’m Jolie and I’m no threat to you.” I give her a pointed look so she can read between the lines.

She nods. “I don’t want him to get hurt being so close to you.”
