Theo sighs. “The monsters here are like Joe. They are more other than human. Though not as other as me. It is safer that you are hidden because they won’t have seen an unchanged human in a long time.”

“Yeah, I’m fresh meat.” Everything here wants a piece of me.

Theo nods, which isn’t reassuring at all.

“for how long will you stay so big?”

“I don’t know.” He lifts his claws and shrugs. “I shouldn’t have eaten it.”

I think everyone has regretted that extra bite of cake, that one cookie too many, more than once. I’m guessing this is no different. “I think you seem healthier now. You were skeletal before. Fragile even.”

He stares at the ground. It’s not his health that he’s worried about. “You saw me eat.”

“Yeah…” And I will never forget that, ever.

“And now I’ve eaten, I am so hungry,” he says with a growl.

I can’t see them, but I feel Michael and Joe tense. Something in the air changes with that admission.

“I was hoping it would calm the blood lust, but it didn’t. Joe knows what I mean.”

I turn to look at Joe. Is he hungry all the time and fighting not to eat me?

If Joe feels it, then he is more far gone than Michael. Unless Michael is hiding it better.

Joe’s lip curls as though he hates Theo for mentioning it. “It’s not a hunger or a blood lust…it’s a rage. A rage that wants to revel in blood shed and destruction.” As he talks, his fingers open and close like he can’t take being still any longer. The end of his tail flicks as though he wants to flit from side to side. He is full of energy that he is trying to direct into something other than killing for fun. “Living with Michael kept me in check.” He inclines his head at Theo. “You too, probably.”

“Definitely. However imagined killing you both at least once a day.”

My pulse quickens, and I’m sure that at least one of them can smell the fear that is brewing in my belly. “Do you still do that?”

Theo gives a slow nod. “I can’t help it. Better that I imagine than do it.”

Right, I can’t disagree with that statement. I’m deep in Under and my monsters, who are hoping to be men again, are opening up and sharing the worst part of themselves. I should be glad they feel that comfortable. That they aren’t going to eat me.

I glance at where my missing toe should be.

“I couldn’t help that,” Joe says. “I wish I could say that I feel bad about it, or something.”

“It’s fine.” I don’t miss it. I’m sure I will when I get home. “Was it nice?”

All four eyes close and his face takes on a blissful expression. “It sated the rage.”

“What else sates the rage?” I don’t suppose I can convince them to do some deep breathing or yoga.

He opens his eyes and looks at me. “I think you already know the answer.”

Right. Sex. I shouldn’t have bothered asking.

“So if the monsters stopped trying to kill each other and started fucking, Under would be a nicer place?” If they did that, they’d find their way home, and no one would be trapped here until they were killed.

Joe grins. “Yeah, though I’ve only met one person who wants to fuck monsters.”

I open my mouth to say two. But he hasn’t told Michael, and he never acted on it either.

Joe glances at Michael, as if he read my thoughts. “Like I said, only one person brave enough to fuck monsters.”

Michael peels the bandage off his arm and inspects the wound. While it hasn’t fully healed, it doesn’t seem like it was made this morning. “You going to tell me what the secret in the book is?”
