“Then fuck him. I will never keep you two a secret.”

Juniper looks up at me. “What?”

“Did I stutter, June? I will never keep you and Tobias a secret. Ever. Derek is a fucking asshole. Nobody deserves to be treated the way he treats you. Men like that aren’t men at all. Now turn that damn brain off and let’s get some sleep.”

I walk to the other side of the bed and pull the blanket down, laying next to Juniper. She turns in the bed, looking at me before finally laying down. I reach over and pull her to me, our bodies curling together as I wrap my arm across her. Kissing her head, I close my eyes and smile, letting sleep take us both away.

“Goodnight my sweet Juniper.”

Chapter seven

Golden Sunflowers

Juniper

StretchingasIrollover on the bed, I groan at the ache between my legs. But thinking back to last night…lordthat man knows what he’s doing.

Opening my eyes, I’m surprised to see that the other side of the bed is empty. I can’t help but feel a pang of hurt, but quickly shake that off.

It’s fine, Juniper. Stop overthinking. You both needed a good O and now it’s back to being neighbors. All those words were just in the heat of the moment.

I push out of bed and head right into the shower, washing off and getting ready for the day. Pulling my hair into a ponytail, I tie a silky yellow ribbon around it and smile in the mirror.

Positive thoughts, June!

I grab my favorite pair of overalls and pair it with a cute little white crop top and my white high-top sneakers. There’s too much to be done today and I can’t stop and think about anything.

Walking down the hall, I open Tobias’s door to see him still sound asleep. Smiling at my little boy, I close the door and head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee.

Stepping outside, I turn my face up toward the sun. It’s like my batteries are being recharged as the sun beams down on me, warming my skin and sending a wonderful chill down my spine.

Gathering up my supplies, I get to work on an old set of kitchen chairs I found for free on the side of the road. I pick up the sander and get to work.

An hour or so goes by when I hear the slider door open. Looking up, a sleepy Tobias comes walking out, his little bear stuffed animal in hand.

“Morning, sleepyhead!”

“Morning, mommy.”

I smile as he shuffles over, cuddling up to me on the ground. “Let’s get you some breakfast, buddy. I need a break too.”

We head inside and I click the coffee machine on as I grab some waffles and fruit for Tobias. Popping the waffles in the toaster, I get to work cutting the fruit up.

Soon, Tobias and I are singing and laughing as we dance around the kitchen. The sound of the doorbell plays along with us and I dance over to the front door. But when I open it, nobody is there. I look down to see a bundle of dark red sunflowers.

Picking them up, I bring them into the kitchen as Tobias turns the music down. He grabs a vase and fills it with water.

“Somebody left these for us, baby. Oh, and look! A note!”

I pull the folded piece of paper out and smile.

“Read it, mommy!”

I unfold it and smile. “I know these can’t compare to your beauty, but I hope they make you smile.”

Tobias stands on the stool and smells them. “So good, mommy.”

“I wonder who left them.”
