Grant nailed her with a frosty gaze. “There are at least twenty other graduate students who could make similar claims, and they all know their way around an excavation site.”

But they weren’t available.

Should she remind him of that? Or would she come off as impertinent?

“I assume you took this position in the hopes of gaining favor with Dr. Roth?” he asked. “Since you still require a fourth member of your dissertation committee?”

His contemptuous tone unsettled her stomach. “It’s not the only reason. I’ve been wanting to get back into the field ever since—”

Shit.

“Get back into the field? Your resume didn’t mention any field experience.”

She scrambled for a response that wouldn’t reveal anything about Clear Lake. “I took a summer class when I was in…high school. For a few weeks. It got me excited about archaeology.”

A blatant lie, but he seemed to buy into it. “A high school class? Hardly what I’d call experience. I hope you won’t be a burden. If so, I’ll have no qualms about informing Dr. Roth you’re not up to the job. He won’t want you here if you can’t pull your weight.”

“Of course. I understand.” Please let this conversation be over.

“Good. We’re having dinner in the village of Kouklia at six thirty. It’s a short walk, so I suggest you clean up and be ready to go in ten minutes. You’ll meet Dr. Roth there.”

“Great. Thanks.” As she watched Grant walk away, all Olivia wanted to do was retreat to the hot, stuffy classroom, crash out on a camp cot, and sleep for the next ten hours. If it wasn’t stressful enough that she had to deal with Rick, now she was stuck with a supervisor who acted like a judgmental prick.

The next six weeks weren’t going to be easy.
