“He might not,” Dusty said. “But you also got him off the hook for the gate fiasco. He owes you for that.”

“Hardly. He wasn’t even grateful.”

“He was probably still pissed at you,” Sofia said. “But before you go after him, you have to decide whether you want him back, just as he is. Even if he forgives you, he’s not going to change his lifestyle. Can you accept that?”

Olivia had given the issue a lot of thought. “I wouldn’t want him to change; he’s a wonderful guy. But I’m not sure if there’s room in his life for me.”

“There might be,” Dusty said. “But you need to be honest. Put yourself out there.”

Sofia gestured with the nail file. “No wimping out. Look him in the eye and tell him how much you love him.”

“I never said I loved him,” Olivia sputtered. “I…”

Why was she denying it? She loved him as much as she had at Clear Lake. Or more because she wasn’t that same inexperienced nineteen-year-old. By now, she’d dated enough guys to know Rick was the real deal. Not only had he treated her with patience, respect, and kindness, he’d helped her rediscover her love of archaeology.

“You’re not fooling anyone,” Sofia said.

Olivia released a long, drawn-out breath. “Okay. But even if I admit I’m in love with him, I don’t think he feels the same way. All he wanted was a few weeks of fun. Nothing else.”

Sofia began brushing a clear coat of polish over her nails. “Maybe he’s changed. You won’t know unless you ask.”

“Even if he just wants a fling, wouldn’t you rather spend your last week in Cyprus with him?” Dusty asked. “Sure, it’ll hurt when he leaves, but you’re already hurting anyway. Why not go out with a bang?”

Sofia grinned. “A literal bang. Am I right?”

She always was.

If Olivia wanted a shot at happiness, she couldn’t let her fear and anxiety get the best of her. For years, she’d been so afraid of taking chances that she hadn’t really lived. Even if she’d be opening herself up to more heartbreak, she needed to be honest with Rick. Because a life without risk was no life at all.
