“Is there a reason you were so far behind?” he asked. “You’re late for lunch.”

Olivia checked her watch. Though it was a few minutes past one, no one was seated at the picnic tables yet.

“We’re not that late,” Rick said. “Looks to me like lunch isn’t ready.”

“That’s not the point,” Grant said. “You arrived a good twenty minutes after the other cars. There must be a reason.”

Pushing past her trepidation, Olivia forced herself to speak up. “It’s my fault. I was overly thorough and slowed the team down.”

Grant scanned her from head to foot. “You’re looking a little worse for the wear, Miss Sanchez. That’s quite the sunburn. And what’s that on your legs?”

Why was everyone obsessed with her legs? Glancing down at them, she shuddered. In the space of half an hour, they’d grown worse, all red and bumpy from her spreading rash. “I think I was allergic to some of the plants on my route.”

He shook his head in disgust. “Are you sure you can handle this job?”

“Don’t be a dick,” Rick muttered. “It’s her first day.”

“What did you call me?” Grant said.

“You heard me.”

The two men stared each other down like a pair of vicious dogs. Olivia wanted to grab Rick’s arm and pull him away, but she worried her interference might make things worse.

Grant broke first. “Go clean up. Lunch will be here soon.”

As she watched Grant leave, Olivia hoped Rick would stick around so she could apologize. But he took off quickly, leaving her alone.

Some archaeologist.

Her first day of survey and she was a giant failure.
