“My mom thought that’s why you and my dad met. She thought he gave them to you.”

“I’m lost.”

“Sera’s mom thought you stole her father’s wine formulas, Dad.”

He seemed genuinely confused. “I don’t know anything about them.”

“Do you want to come inside?”

“Sure, but uh, what about your mom and sister?” Noah asked.

I looked over my shoulder as if they’d magically appear. “I’m not sure.”

“I’ll go look for them,” he offered.

Not knowing what else to do, I took him up on it.

“Maybe I should go with Noah and help look for them,” Hewitt offered.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. Look, I know none of this is your fault, but before my mom left, she told me she didn’t want to meet with us.”

“Understood. I don’t want to make her more uncomfortable than she already is.”

“I don’t know about you, but I could really use a glass of wine.”

“I’ll join you.”

Hewitt followed me into the kitchen.

“Sorry,” I said, motioning to the mess on the table. “We were finishing lunch.”

“You pick out the wine, and I’ll clean this up. If you’re done.”

“Yep,” I said, smiling since there was no food left on the plates.

Hewitt stacked the dishes and carried them to the sink.

“Thanks, I can take it from here. Is this one okay?” I handed him a bottle of Butler Ranch Chardonnay and an opener. “Glasses are in there.” I pointed to a cabinet.

“Perfect.”

I rinsed the dishes and shoved them into the dishwasher, knowing if I didn’t, Hewitt would probably insist on doing it himself.

“Shall we sit in here?” he asked when I wiped my hands on a towel.

“Sure.”

He pulled out my chair and sat after I did.

“I’m so sorry about this. It’s all a misunderstanding that could have been cleared up if my mom, my sister, and I had simply talked about it.”

“I’m not sure what you’re referring to with the formulas, but I would like to tell you what happened that night.”

“Maybe we should wait.”

The door opened at the same time I finished my sentence, and my mom, Luisa, and Noah rushed inside. “We were almost drenched,” said Luisa.

Noah’s father stood. “Hello, Leah.”
