While every other person at the table had tears in their eyes or was crying, I knew I was about to break down. I had to get out of the room. I would’ve left the house if Noah hadn’t stopped me.

“Shh,” he soothed, stroking my hair with one hand while he held me close to him with the other. “Come with me.” When I didn’t move, he lifted me in his arms and carried me up the stairs.

“Which one is yours?” he asked.

“None of them. I slept in the same room with Luisa.” I pointed to the largest of the rooms. “That one is empty, though.”

After carrying me in, Noah gently set me on the bed, then rested beside me.

“I left everyone sitting there,” I said, trying to get up.

“They’ll be fine. You, on the other hand, are dead on your feet.”

“I feel like I’ve gone through the wringer and was hung out to dry.”

He smiled. “Close your eyes.”

“I can’t. I have to—”

Noah kissed me. “You have to rest.”
