For Beau, it is. Press not so much.

I had a nice afternoon. Sounds weird to say with my sister missing.

You can still have nice afternoons.

Thanks, Noah.

Good night, Sera.

Good night.

I wished he hadn’t said good night so quickly. On the other hand, there was nothing else to chat about. Still, I felt oddly lonely as I finished the small amount of wine I’d poured, turned off the downstairs lamp, and went up to Luisa’s room.

There was no light shining from my mother’s bedroom door, not that I would’ve gone in to talk to her if there had been.

I changed into my pajamas, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and crawled into the full-size bed. It took up most of the space in the small room that otherwise held a desk, one bookshelf, a dresser, and a nightstand. I wondered if I should tell Noah only one person would be needed to search her room. Two men the size of Press and Beau wouldn’t fit in here at the same time.

I picked up my phone to send a text, decided I could do it in the morning, and was about to set it down when I saw another message from him.

Still awake?

Yes.

I had a nice afternoon too. And evening.

Me too.

I could’ve kept talking to you.

Same.

I’ll let you get to sleep.

I smiled. I’m not tired.

Me neither.

I like your house.

The dots marched, then stopped, then started again, then stopped again. This went on for a couple of minutes.

Everything okay?I asked.

Yeah. Sorry. I…

That was weird. I what?

You said you liked my house.

I do. So?

I like you.
