“Don’t look now, but the ADA just walked in,” said Vader. “I wasn’t going to tell you this, but since she’s here, I better.”
“Tell me what?” Was she about to serve us all with subpoenas or something? At a charity fundraiser? God, I wouldn’t put it past her. I glanced in the direction Vader had told me not to and saw her looking around the room.
If she was here to serve us papers, she’d certainly gotten dolled up for it. In fact, I’d go so far as to say she looked stunning.
“It’s not about Addison, Peg, Brix, or Los Caballeros,” I heard Vader say.
“What isn’t?”
“I told you. She said it’s imperative she speak with you and it isn’t about any of that.”
If it wasn’t about Addy, Peg, Brix, or Los Cab, then what did she have to talk to me about? I hated to imagine.
“There’s your cue.”
“What?”
“Clean out your damned ears, Ridge. Alex announced the bachelors should report backstage.”
The timing couldn’t have been better. Unless I was right about the subpoenas. If she served them while we were on stage, it would be the talk of the Central Coast for the next hundred years.
“Seraphina is here,” I said to Brix, who I found waiting behind the stage’s curtain.
His eyes scrunched. “The DA?”
“The assistant DA, but yes, her.”
“What in the hell is she doing here?” he asked.
“How would I know?”
“You’re the only one she seems to talk to.”
“Well, we didn’t talk about her being here.”
Brix stepped forward and peeked out the curtain. “I don’t see her.”
Fuck. I hoped that didn’t mean she was headed our way.
“Wait. There she is. She’s talking to Vader and Peg.”
“How do they look?” I asked.
“Vader and Peg?”
“All of them.”
Brix shrugged. “Nice, I guess. I don’t really pay attention to that kind of thing.”
“Not what they’re wearing! Their faces. Never mind. Move and let me look.”
“Their faces?” I heard him mutter.
“They’re smiling.”
“Smiling? Move. Let me see.” I pushed Brix out of the way. “Yep, they’re smiling. Wanna explain why that’s so interesting?”
