“Seven.” The bid came from another person I couldn’t see from where I stood.

“Eight.”

Justine’s paddle went up. “Nine.”

“Ten,” came the voice from the left side of the room. I tried to see who it was, but without bending at the waist or standing on my tiptoes, both of which would make me look pathetic, my view was blocked.

“Eleven thousand, anyone?” Alex waited a few seconds, but no paddles were raised or bids called out. “Ten thousand, going once, going twice. Sold to our lovely bidder!”

Since Alex knew everyone in the room as well as I did, that she didn’t say the winner’s name was curious.

“Please stand so our auction assistant can find you,” she said, shielding her eyes from the bright light. “Who is that?” she asked me after turning off her mic.

I could hear Brix chuckling behind me. “That’s the assistant district attorney,” he told his sister.

“I don’t recognize her. What’s her name?”

“Seraphina Reeve,” I mumbled, wondering what in the hell the woman was up to now.
