Since I went there with Dante, I decided to keep going. He looked less stressed than before I blew him.

"You don't give your brothers enough credit. They want to help you. We all do. So let us."

He zipped up and then flung out his hand. "Get out!"

I pushed myself up from the floor and wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. "What the fuck is your problem?"

"You are my problem." He finished the liquid in the glass and rose from the couch, now towering over me. "Go before I drag you to your apartment by your hair."

"Why are you like this?"

I was on the verge of crying, the tears pricking my eyes. But I fought my best to contain them. I didn't want Dante to see me look weak, to think I couldn't handle him.

"You wouldn't understand."

When he walked away to refill his drink, I left the apartment with tears spilling down my cheeks, regretting ever touching him. And he didn't come after me.

ChapterSixteen

DANTE

Ava thought she could play games with me. And she was getting way too comfortable with my brothers. So it was time to move on to the next phase of my plan.

No more waiting.

We’d had men out looking for Giancarlo for close to a week without success. Being nice to the thief’s daughter wasn’t getting us anywhere, and it was time to show her how we did business.

The old-fashioned way.

I ordered Angelo and Stefan to come home from the clubs. Of course, they weren’t thrilled with my plan. Neither was Nicodemus. But I was the boss of this family, and my brothers would do what I told them.

With my brothers behind me, I opened Ava’s apartment door with the master keycard. Whenever I wanted, I could slip in and out. This place wasn’t a perk of her employment. It was a way for us to track her at all times.

She had zero privacy.

The lights were off on the first floor. And after the door slammed behind Nicodemus, Ava appeared at the second-floor railing. Eyes wide, she stared at us. Ava wore a black, silky spaghetti strap shirt that rode up her stomach and matching shorts.

“What are you doing here?” She put her hands on her narrow hips, pushing out her tits. “I’m getting ready for bed.”

I crossed my arms over my chest and looked up at her gorgeous body, careful not to let my eyes wander too much. “You’re coming out with us. Get dressed.”

“But,” she bit out. “Where are we going? It’s close to midnight.”

Angelo walked toward the stairs and extended his palm, staring at her. “Get dressed, dolcezza. It’s a surprise.”

Even with him speaking calmly, using one of his stupid pet names for her, she still looked scared. Her top lip quivered, despite her best effort to hide her fear from us.

She was wise to be afraid.

“What should I wear?”

“Something comfortable.” Angelo threw out his hand. “Now, go.”

“Um.” Ava bit her lip, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “Okay, give me a minute.”

“I don’t like this,” Stefan said in a hushed tone. “This could kill her.”

Nicodemus nodded in agreement. “If you hurt her,” he warned but didn’t get out the rest before I raised my hand to silence him.
