Placing my hand on his chest, I felt his heart beat beneath my fingers and looked into his eyes. “Please, Dante. You promised. And I know you’re not a man who backs out of deals.”

“Fine,” he groaned. “One dance.”

He led me onto the dance floor, where at least a dozen couples danced to a slow song. Most of the guests were busy eating and drinking. Some were out on the balcony smoking cigars.

The twins were with their father. Nico was with Vittoria, staring at me from across the room. I hated seeing him with the enemy, but it was part of the show. He had a plan to get rid of her, so I had to trust him.

I hooked my arms around Dante’s neck. His hands moved to my waist, but he wasn’t aggressive like his brothers.

“This isn’t so bad, right?”

“I don’t enjoy human contact.”

I laughed at his word choice. “You sound like a robot when you say things like that.”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “I’m not a robot.”

“Then start acting human. Even the way you move is robotic like you’re repeating the motions from memory.” I pressed my chest to his and breathed in his spicy cologne. “You don’t have to be in control all the time, Dante.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Lose control with me.” I breathed on his lips. “I still think about the last time you did when I’m alone at night.”

He stared at me as if he were trying to extract the thoughts from my mind. “How often do you think about me?”

“A lot.” I licked my lips. “More than I should.”

When the song ended, he released me from his grasp and took a few steps back. Our rare moment of intimacy ended as quickly as it began.

“Come.” He raised his hand to beckon me. “I’ll introduce you to the mayor of Atlantic City. He’s interested in investing in the hedge fund.”

Just like that, he shifted back to his cold, emotionless self, all business. But it was fun while it lasted.

STEFAN

Ava strolled into my office on Sunday night with Tony Natale. He'd started as my driver five years ago and now served as her bodyguard. Tony was good at his job and one of my top guys.

I trusted him with my girl.

Ava swayed her narrow hips, beaming a smile as she hopped onto my lap. I tipped my head at Tony and gestured for him to leave us. I'd been so busy dealing with shit from Johnny Z and his crew all week that I hadn't spent much time with my girl.

I slid my arm behind her back. "I hear you're behaving yourself."

She chuckled. "Who told you that?"

"Dante gives us daily reports about you."

"Of course he does." Ava sucked my bottom lip into her mouth. "I came early so we could spend more time together. I haven't seen you all week. Dante has been a pain in my ass."

I brushed her cheek with my thumb, staring into her eyes. "Bossing people around gives him purpose. You'll get used to it after a while."

"Is that why you and Angelo never talk back to him?"

I shrugged against the leather chair. "Our brother has given up a lot for us. If he needs something, we'll do it. No questions asked."

"Even Nico?"
