Dante scrubbed a hand across his jaw. “Because women who get too close to me die.”

His mother.

“I’m close to you right now.” My lips brushed his. “And I’m not going anywhere.”

“No one will ever know about you. It’s the only way we can protect you.”

“Protect me from who? The Vitales.”

“We have a lot of enemies.”

“You can touch me without being afraid I’m going to disappear. And I want to touch you, Dante. I have waited so long for this.”

He carried me into the bathroom, setting my feet on the floor in front of the garden tub. “You need a bath before you leave for the party.”

“I’m not going anywhere until you kiss me.”

He smirked. “Fuck, you’re annoying.”

Then he palmed the back of my head and sucked my bottom lip into his mouth. He bit and pulled until I moaned for him, and after a while, our tongues tangled. Each kiss was angry and hot and unlike any other kiss.

“Get in the tub.” Dante smacked my ass. “I’ll make your pussy feel better.”

ChapterTwenty-Two

NICO

Giancarlo finally called Ava. It was eight o’clock on the night of her birthday. And as expected, he called to wish her a happy birthday.

I listened to the conversation that confirmed he fucked over our family. As we discussed, Ava got him to tell her every detail. I knew from the start she was on our side and that she would choose us.

I stuffed the phone into my pocket and went straight to Dante’s penthouse. If it were a typical night, he would have eaten dinner at seven and returned to work. But the four of us had planned to take Ava to The Monella Club. Angelo had a few ideas to push Ava out of her comfort zone.

And now that we had a lead on Giancarlo, the club could wait for another night. I balled my hand into a fist and banged on Dante’s door.

He opened after the second knock.

“Giancarlo called Ava.” I held up my cell phone. “I recorded the call.”

With that, he held the door and gestured for me to enter his apartment. I strolled down the long white-and-black marble hallway and followed him to the living room. The space had little personality, but I wasn’t one to talk. I never even bothered to decorate my apartment—just a few things here and there added by the interior decorator.

“Giancarlo told Ava how to access the money.”

Dante sat in the oversized leather armchair and extended his hand for me to sit on the couch. “What did he say?”

I let him listen to the audio, then sent a copy of the transcription to his phone.

He tipped his head at me, then drank from a glass of scotch. “You did good, Nico.”

Nico, not Nicodemus.

Now that we were sharing a woman, he was coming around, treating me more like his equal. About fucking time. It only took twenty-five years and one feisty woman to bring us together.

After Dante let the recording play twice, he hopped off the couch, jaw clenched.

“We’re going over to the Vianellos house. We need access to Giancarlo’s safe,” Dante said on our way out of his apartment. “Ava can open it.” He tapped the button on the wall and waited until we were inside the elevator before saying, “Call Stefan and Angelo. Get them over to Ava’s house. We do this together.”
