I stepped in front of them and shoved the gun into the holster. “What happened?”

“I killed Dominic Rossi.” Nicodemus set Ava’s feet on the floor in the kitchen, holding her against his chest. “He came here looking for the money Giancarlo owes him. Good thing we got here in time, or he would’ve taken Ava.”

I narrowed my eyes at Ava. “How much money does your father owe?”

She bit her bottom lip, unable to meet my gaze. “My dad took a loan from the Vitales to pay back what he stole from you. I’m not sure how much. He never said.”

My nostrils flared at her confession. “And he was still short ten million?”

Ava nodded. “Not including the seven million he stole from me.” She shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “He said he lost a lot of money to new investments.”

We got our money back from Ava, but only because our girl was a fucking genius.

“Nico overheard your phone call with your dad.” I clutched her shoulder and steered her down the hallway. “Show us to your father’s office. We heard what he said about the money.”

Ava led the way to Giancarlo’s office. It was the size of a living room with a large oak desk at the center and built-in bookshelves.

“My dad keeps everything in the safe.” She walked toward a Monet painting hung on the interior wall. “I’m not sure what’s in here. But maybe it will help us figure out where he went.”

Our captive had resigned to the fact her father fucked her over and left her to die. But luckily for Ava, she was one of us now. We would protect her from our enemies and her father’s. Proving her loyalty to my family changed how I felt about her.

We could trust her.

Angelo pulled the painting off the wall, so Ava could enter her father’s passcode into the safe. The door clicked open, and she stepped aside for me to look inside.

Not surprisingly, there wasn’t any cash or checks. Just a list of foreign bank account numbers with the PINs and authorization codes.

I lifted a gold key and showed it to Ava. “Do you know what this goes to?”

“A safe deposit box at a local bank.”

I pocketed the key. “Do you know what he keeps there?”

“My dad said he had fake credentials made for me, so I could run.”

“What else did he say?”

“He told me to buy a one-way plane ticket to the Bahamas.”

Angelo moved beside me, hands shoved into his pockets. “So that’s where he went. But how? Our guys didn’t find any record of Giancarlo leaving the country.”

“He must have friends we don’t know about.”

With her top lip quivering, she stood in front of me. “Please don’t kill him. I’ll do anything you want. Just let my dad live.”

“You know I can’t do that,” I fired back. “If I make an exception for one person, then others will think they can steal from us and get away with it.”

“But I paid you back plus interest.” She shoved her palms into my chest, sobbing. “Dante, please. Let him go. He won’t come back.”

I clutched her wrists, teeth gritted. “This is how we do business.”

“Please,” she choked out, tears streaming down her cheeks.

A strange sensation tore through my chest. This girl was growing on me, and I couldn’t stay away despite how much I fought my desire for her.

I had to have her.

“Dante, c’mon.” Angelo rested his hand on my shoulder. “We can make an exception for Ava. She’s right. Giancarlo won’t come back here. And she settled his debts.”
