Paulie shook his head. “I’m sorry, Nico. Unfortunately, Sal didn’t make it.”

“I need to see them.” Clinging to my arm, Ava tugged on my suit jacket. “Take me to the hospital.”

“It’s not safe,” Paulie said with caution in his tone. “The Vitales picked off your family one by one. If you leave the penthouse, you risk getting whacked.” He tipped his head at Ava. “And there’s no guarantee for her safety either. This attack was an act of war.”

“No,” Ava cried. “We have to see them. I want to be there when Dante wakes up.”

“If he wakes up,” Paulie said with a grim expression. “The doctor didn’t sound optimistic.”

“What about the twins?”

Paulie shrugged. “They won’t know until after they get out of surgery.”

His words had a bite to them as if he thought they might not make it through the surgery.

“You have to step up as the interim head of the family.” Paulie patted my shoulder and squeezed. “The men can’t go to war without a leader.”

Technically, I wasn’t allowed to be a made man because I wasn’t one hundred percent Italian descent. But my dad made an exception for me. Some of his men rebelled back then, and now that he was gone, I doubted they would accept me as their leader.

Dante needed to wake up.

They respected him.

“I need to see my dad,” I told him.

His eyebrows rose. “Didn’t you hear me, kid? He’s dead.”

I hated when he called me kid.

Folding my arms over my chest, I took a deep breath to still my nerves. “I’m not doing anything until I see my family. Dead or alive.”
