I looked into his gray eyes. “What are you afraid of?”

He stared into the expanse of the field before he looked at me. “Losing you.”

Marcello tumbled out of the metal pipe with the grace of a tiger. He was so naturally athletic and coordinated, while I must have fallen flat on my face at least a dozen times before I saw the sunlight peeking through the tunnel.

“You will not lose me,” I told Bastian. “I’m here to stay.”

Bastian put his hand on my shoulder, a smile still in place. Marcello came up behind me and clutched my hip, digging his long fingers into my skin. I spun around to face him, and he surprised me by planting a soul stealing kiss on my lips.

Hooking my arms around his neck, I lost myself at the moment. It felt like an eternity before our lips separated. And when they did, I couldn’t breathe as I looked up and into his dark blue eyes. He was so beautiful, even covered in mud and sewer filth.

“Where are Luca and Damian?” I glanced over Marcello’s shoulder to see if his brothers were close behind us.

Not a sight.

Not a sound.

“They should be here any minute,” Marcello assured me. “Don’t worry about Luca. He’s indestructible.”

“And Damian?”

He shook his head. “Our enemies should be more afraid of what he will do to them.”

“He’s a man, not a god. They can kill all of you, and yet you act like it is nothing. Like we didn’t just run from Russian gangsters, or get shot at, or climb through a fucking storm drain.”

He rolled his broad shoulders. “It was nothing. Just another day for us.”

Bastian moved to my side and pulled me from Marcello’s arms. “Damian is fine, baby.” He kissed the top of my head, wrapping me in his warm embrace. “So is Luca. You don’t have to worry about them.”

Ten minutes later, I heard a loud groan and rushed over to the metal pipe. I breathed a sigh of relief when Luca’s black hair and pretty blue eyes came into focus.

“Why do you look like you’ve just seen a ghost?” Luca asked me.

I put my hands on my hips to calm the nerves shaking through me. “Because I was worried about you.”

He smirked. “You can’t kill the Devil, baby girl.”

Annoyed by his arrogance, I blew out a deep breath. Though I found it kind of sexy. Luca was always so confident, in control, in charge of every situation. I could put my life in his hands and everything would be okay.

We all trusted him.

After Luca hopped down, he extended his hand to Damian, who jumped out of the pipe with ease. They made it look so effortless. Like they hadn’t crawled through shit and sludge to get to safety.

Marcello hit a button on his watch and raised his wrist to his mouth. It had several buttons that allowed him to communicate with members of Alpha Command. My broody protector was like a more muscular, scarier version of GI Joe.

A few minutes after we climbed out of the drain, Hades, Charon, Morpheus, and Lethe joined us. Three black SUVs arrived in the middle of nowhere, a field that seemed endless.

Marcello spoke to a blond man with a severe jawline who dressed in black fatigues. He had a buzz cut and thick biceps and looked like he’d spent years in the military.

Without a word, The Serpents walked over to the first SUV and climbed into the back. Marcello finished up with his team member, who took his place in the driver’s seat of the second SUV. Then Marcello tapped my back and ushered me over to the last SUV. Luca offered to drive. Bastian got into the passenger seat beside him, and Damian hoped into the last row by himself.

My heart wouldn’t stop racing as I got into the back with Marcello beside me, his arm draped across my neck, holding me close. With him, I truly felt safe. The others said they would kill for me, and I believed them. But when Marcello said he would die for me, I one hundred percent knew it was true.

I loved him.

It sounded so strange in my mind as we drove down the desolate road. I never thought it was possible to love more than one man. And yet, I loved both Marcello and Bastian.

Maybe not equally.
