He nodded. “That would be my guess.”

“Luca likes to go big for his birthday.”

It was the one day each year he allowed himself a day off from work to drink, get high, and do whatever the fuck he wanted.

One day to lose control.

I walked over to Alex’s side of the bed and lifted her in my arms. She stirred when I brushed the hair off her face and kissed her cheek. Our girl was so damn beautiful. As usual, her curls were all over the place, but I loved that about her. The wild hair, the high rosy cheeks, and those pretty blue eyes that practically jumped off her face.

So perfect and mine.

I wouldn’t normally wake her this late at night, but I had a surprise for her. We had spent little time together since the shooting. It hurt like hell to feel like I was losing my grip on her, but I also understood why she’d put an ocean between us. I knew firsthand what it was like to lose someone I love. Alex was afraid Marcello’s heart would stop beating if she left his side.

“I’ll bring her back in the morning,” I told Marcello, and then left his bedroom.

As I walked to my bedroom, she turned on her side and peeked up at me with one eye open. “Bash?” She rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “Where are you taking me?”

“To my bedroom. I want to show you something.”

“Where’s Marcello?” Her chest rose and fell in panic. “Is he okay?”

“Yeah, baby. He’s fine. Sleeping in his bed.”

“But…” She squirmed in my arms as we entered my room. “Why are you taking me away from him?”

Her words sliced into my chest.

I sat on the piano bench and put her on my lap. “You’re mine, too. But you seem to have forgotten that.”

She blinked a few times as she looked at me, still a little sleepy. “I’m sorry, Bash.” Her lips brushed mine. “I didn’t mean to push you away.”

“You’ve been ignoring all of us because you’re mad at Luca.”

“No, it wasn’t like that. I never meant to make any of you feel that way, not even Luca.” She clutched my wrist, her eyes glassy, like she was on the verge of crying. “I’m not mad at him. I only asked for some space because he wouldn’t stop hovering over me.”

I caressed the back of her neck with my fingers. “It’s okay, Cherry. I forgive you. But you should kiss and make up with Luca before his birthday.”

“I completely forgot.” She shook her head, lips pursed. “You’re right. I’ve been so focused on Marcello, I’ve been neglecting all of you.”

“It’s okay, baby. You can make it up to Luca on his birthday. He’s throwing a big party at the house.”

“Another party?” Surprise scrolled across her beautiful face. “Is that smart after those men shot up the house?”

“No need to worry.” I turned her to face the piano and laid her fingers on the keys. “We got it under control. Only about a dozen or two of the Knights will join us for the party. And they won’t be leaving the house until the morning.”

Sparks of electricity spread up my arms as I moved her fingers across the keys, playing the song I wrote for her. She smiled and even giggled as our fingers moved in unison. The soft haunting sound floated through the air, and I wondered if Damian was listening from his room. I kept the door open for him when I played because it helped him sleep.

“I can’t believe I’m playing the piano,” Alex whispered, then she glanced over her shoulder at me. “No matter how many times we do this, it still feels like the first time.”

“You’re a natural, baby.”

I winked, and she laughed.

“Have you named the song yet?”

I stopped playing for a moment and brushed her curls off her shoulder so I could kiss her shoulder. Sliding the thin strap of her top aside, I continued my slow trail of kisses down her arm. She shivered as I made my way up her neck. I peppered her jaw with soft kisses, sliding my hand beneath her chin to turn her gaze back to me. “For years, you have consumed me. Haunted me.” I sucked her earlobe into my mouth. “Bewitched me.”

She relaxed into my arms and angled her body to kiss my lips. “Bash, I missed you.”
