He growled at the fucker's audacity; River would never put a patient at risk. Thankfully Nora spoke up before he could be an asshole to the wrong person. "I'll discuss it with her and explain about the delay. Now, tell us when we're allowed to look for a place to live and move to the fae witch territory in the East End."

Khan folded his arms over his chest. "That's unnecessary because I've already selected a place for you."

River frowned. "What?"

"The location is convenient for my people to watch over you during your trial period, but it also will make it easy to visit relatives in the vampire's territory. You should have no complaints."

Despite the bit about being close to the vampires, in reality the bastard was denying Nora the chance to pick her own home.

Her first real one of her choosing.

All he wanted to do was yell at the fae witch, but somehow restrained himself.Remember, don't pick a fight you can't win. He'd find a way to make it up to Nora, somehow, some way. But he'd never be able to do that if he the Dark Lord decided to throw him in jail or something. Who knew what the old-timey bastards did when challenged. And unlike with Leo, he didn't have some leeway because of being a brother-in-law.

After a deep breath, he bit out, "Will we have to live there forever?"

Khan shook his head. "No, but for at least a year, though. There is enough room to run your doctor's office as well. I've stocked it with everything you'll need to get started."

He eyed the male warily. "Why would you do that?"

Khan shrugged. "I'm loaning the equipment, not giving it to you. And you can thank your sister. She and I made a bargain, so that you could start out well-equipped and without delay once you're well again."

River wasn't fucking sick, but that was besides the point. "Yesenia did that?"

Khan's voice softened a fraction. "Your sister is bloody wonderful. Make sure you tell her that."

The Dark Lord stood, placed a folded piece of paper on the table near his chair, and moved to the window at the far side of the room, the one that overlooked the drive. "You seem well enough for now, so I must return to London. I expect you to arrive at that address within the next two days and move in within the week. You may come visit here again later. However, I want the marriage to take place as soon as possible and you living within my domain the same day." He looked over his shoulder, piercing River with a firm look. "Defy me and I won't help you again. I may even force you back to the future, once Yesenia has the skill to do such a task. Understood?"

The fucking bastard and his threats.

And yet, River knew telling him off would accomplish nothing. Not to mention if he acted like a dick, all of Yesenia's bargaining and hard work would be for nothing.

He glanced at Nora. Without saying a word, she nodded and said, "I don't mind."

River caressed her cheek with his fingers and then said to Khan, "Fine, we'll do that. Although I'll need more answers soon, like really soon, to better know my boundaries here."

Khan turned back toward them. "I assume you mean regarding your future knowledge and what you can use." River nodded. "When you meet the tracker, she will also give you detailed instructions about that. I've been heavily involved with your case to date, but going forward Helen and a few others will mainly be monitoring you. When you're judged healed and recovered, we'll meet again then." Khan moved to the doorway. "Don't disappoint me, Vale. Because the last thing you want to be is my enemy, no matter who you're related to."

With that, the Dark Lord exited the room and River narrowed his eyes. "The fucker. Do all leaders in this time period need to act like an asshole to appear powerful?"

Nora placed a hand on his leg. "You know I don't like rumors, but they say Khan once lost control of his powers as a young male and ever since, he does everything he can to keep people at a distance."

River didn't know how old Khan was exactly—maybe forty?—but that still would've been a long fucking time ago. "Surely he knows what he's doing now."

Nora shrugged. "I would think so. But no one knows what exactly happened then, or how bad it truly was. Some things stay with a person forever."

As they both well knew.

He sighed and cupped Nora's cheek. "I suppose. I still don't like how he picked out our place, though. I wanted you to have a say."

She smiled at him. "I'll find a way to make it ours and feel like it was always our choice from the beginning. Although if it's as big as he says, we'll definitely need my dowry to hire servants for a while."

He clenched his jaw a second at the reminder of how everything he'd owned and saved was back in the future. "One day I'll find a way to give you whatever you ask for, baby. I promise."

"We're partners, River. Maybe I provide the money for now, but I'm sure you will in the future. After all, I don't possess any type of magic to monetize."

"No, but you have so many other ways to give, Nora." He paused, deciding that if they were going to be married within days, he needed to bring up the one topic they hadn't really discussed yet. "We have our list of rules, and we can complete the claiming on the wedding night, if you're ready?"

Without hesitation, she smiled. "I'd like that."
