“I won’t accept it as a gift,” he says. “I’ll pay you back.”

I shake my head. “We can talk about that one day, when all this is over and you have your wife and your life back.”

I know he doesn’t want this, but it’s the only way out for him. And I have more than enough money to bail him out—I’ve been saving up a fuckload of cash because I had nothing to spend it on and no one to try to impress.

“I don’t know how this is going to win her back,” Marc says.

“I don’t know, either. But it’s a lot bigger than just you and Stacey. I need you to get back on track. And never do shit like this again—if you’re in trouble, talk to me.”

Marc nods.

“Jenna is going to see Stacey,” I say, and I sit down on the bench next to Marc. “She’s going to try to talk to her about what happened, and we’re going to get you two face to face.”

“I don’t know if that will work. Stacey can be really stubborn.”

I nod. “Yeah, but so can Jen. And the truth is you two belong together. We’re not going to let this go without trying to get you two to talk, at least. When you tell her everything that’s happened.”

“Thanks, Brett,” Marc finally says.

I clap him on the back and he scrubs his face, getting rid of any emotions that might spill over if he doesn’t reel it all back in.

“Let’s take a drive to the bank,” I offer.

Marc nods. “I need to run through a shower first.”

“I’ll wait.”
