Chapter 33

Brett

The excitement in the locker room is palpable. Coach gives us a pep talk but I don’t think any of us are really listening. We’re too pumped, adrenaline rushing through our veins. We want to get out there and stake our claim. We want to beat the shit out of the Golden Bears and take the victory this time.

“Did you figure your shit out?” Colin asks.

I nod. “Yeah, we’re good.”

Colin grins. “Nearly fumbled that one, eh?”

I laugh.

Coach glares at us and we hear him out until he finishes his speech.

“Let’s show them what we’re made of!” Coach cries and we all let out a victorious battle cry.

We head out of the locker room, with our Quarterback running out first. The crowds erupt when we run onto the field.

When I look over my shoulder, I find Jenna in the crowd in no time. It’s like we’re connected and I can find her in any crowd, no matter how big or how small.

She waves at me, a smile plastered on her face.

God, it’s incredible to see her up there, watching me, supporting me.

Stacey is next to her, and she’s just as thrilled.

Now that she and Marc are okay, this game is going to be a tough one. Marc is a hell of a quarterback. He’s one of the biggest reasons we’ve lost against the Golden Bears the past couple of games.

But not today. I’m ready to bring this one home.

We run onto the field and the fans are losing their minds. This is what I play for—the game is incredible, I love it, but the crowds are what make it so electric. They love us, and their cheers, their support, is what carries us through. There’s nothing like running out onto the field and hearing thousands of people cheering. It’s one of the few times everyone comes together, no matter who they are and where they’re from.

We run onto the field, take our positions, and we’re ready to start.

I look at Marc when we sink into our positions.

“Ready to get pummeled?” he asks.

I laugh. “Ready to pummel you,” I answer.

“Not a fucking chance.” He grins at me, and the ball is in play. This is going to be fun. I know Jen is watching, my best friend is out of danger and he and his wife are okay again, and everything is as it should be.

The hour flies by. It’s a constant push and pull—we’re equally matched and we keep overtaking by just a few points, only to drop back again.

I’m standing on the sideline, breathing hard. The Rainbow Warriors have the ball, and our offense is fucking on point. But it’s the fourth quarter and we’re down eight points.

“This is going to be tight,” I say to Colin, watching as Marc shoots up from the back to stop our Quarterback from reaching the End Zone.

“We can’t let them whip us again,” Colin says. “We’re—”

“Oh!” I shout as our Quarterback fumbles and drops the ball. Marc throws himself onto the ball, and it’s transferred to the Golden Bears.

“Fucking idiot,” I say and yank my helmet on.

“Let’s get this shit over and done with,” Colin says around his mouth guard, and we run onto the field to take our defensive positions. As the cornerback, I watch my wide receiver, and when the ball is in play, I keep an eye on the quarterback. What’s he thinking?

It takes only a split second for him to decide, and he throws the ball. My wide receiver makes a run for it but I’m on him like white on rice. He fakes the sweep but I’m on him and push him off the field.
