He hands me a card. “I’ll set the meeting in motion. You’ll hear from me, but you can contact me on that number if you have any questions about what it might mean.”
I look at the card and nod. I know what it will mean—I don’t have to ask. It will mean I get to go to California. I can be with Jenna.
“We’ll talk,” I say.
Terry Frank nods and turns away.
“What was that all about?” Colin asks when we walk into the locker room together.
“I think I’ve just been scouted for the Golden Bears.”
He stares at me. “You’re going?”
“I mean…Yeah. Jenna’s there.”
Colin laughs and shakes his head. “Fucking traitor.”
“We can still be friends,” I say.
“It sounds like you’re breaking up with me,” Colin laughs. “But this is a good thing?”
“Because I’ll be with her,” I say.
Colin shakes his head. “No, because I’ll be able to beat your ass from now on.”
I burst out laughing. “We’ll just have to see about that.”
We shower and get dressed. When we finally leave the locker rooms, Jenna is waiting for me outside. I grab her and kiss her.
“Congratulations on your win,” she says in a breathy voice when I set her down again.
I grin. “Thanks. What do you say we have dinner with Marc and Stacey tonight?”
She nods. “That sounds like a great idea. They’re leaving tomorrow on their honeymoon. You should see them together, so in love, I could gag.”
I laugh. “We’re like that, too.”
“Yeah, but that’s different.” Her face falls a little. “You know I’m leaving tomorrow, too, right?”
I nod. “I know. But…I’m going to follow you home.”
“What?” she asks.
I take her hand and kiss her knuckles. “The Bears want to buy me. We still need to take care of negotiations, but I’m going to take it. And when we start next season…I’ll be in Cali. With you.”
She blinks at me and I can’t tell what she’s thinking.
“Are you serious?” she finally asks.
I nod. “Yeah. You’re going to see so much of me, you’ll get sick of me and wish I would just come back here again.”
A smile stretches across her face like a sunrise.
“We’ll just have to see about that.”
I grab her and kiss her again, and everything is fucking perfect. I got the girl. I’m about to get the team that keeps me with her, and my life has purpose now. More than the game, more than fucking around.
I finally feel like I’m headed somewhere worth it.
