Chapter 19

Jenna

“I don’t know which one will work,” I say, holding up two different napkin rings to the light. “Which one do you like?”

“Don’t ask me,” Nina says, holding her hands up in defense. “I’m going to tell you one thing and Laura is going to hate it. Then we’re all screwed.”

I laugh. “She’s not that bad. And she said we could choose whatever we wanted.”

“Yeah, she did.” Nina nods, but I know what she’s worried about. As we get closer and closer to the wedding,? Laura is getting fussier and fussier about how things should be. Her friends are arriving one by one, and the number of people she wants to blow away is exponentially growing.

Because she’s starting to lose her shit a little, Stacey is a frazzled mess.

That’s why Nina and I are in town on napkin ring duty. The rings we ordered aren’t nearly as extravagant as Laura envisioned and they need to be replaced.

All five hundred of them.

“Okay, I think we should go with the Swarovski,” I say, pointing at the one behind glass.

“You want five hundred of those?” Nina asks. “In a room where there’s an open bar.”

I shrug. “What Laura wants, Laura gets. The guests won’t care either way.”

“I guess so. But I’ll never do something so stupid for my own wedding.”

I nod. I agree. I’ve worked in event management for years and I’ve seen it all—people are willing to spend money on things that won’t matter at all in the long run. But that’s where the money is, and one man’s stupid expenses is another man’s living.

“So, how’s Brett?” Nina asks and cocks a grin at me.

I blush despite myself.

“He’s fine.”

“Oh, girl, he really is,” Nina agrees.

I laugh. “I don’t mean it like that. But…yeah.” My cheeks flame red and Nina giggles. “I really like him. The more we’re spending time together, the more I see a side of him I’m pretty sure no one’s seen before. And it makes me want to get to know more of him, to know what else he’s hiding under that rock-hard façade.”

“And to think, you hated his guts when you first met. Who would have thought that something like this would happen?”

She’s right. I would never in a million years have thought we would end up being…whatever we were.

I put back the other napkin rings and walk to the self-help counter, where I find the forms to order five hundred napkin rings.

“So, he’s not an asshole anymore?” Nina asks.

“Oh, no, he still is.” I chuckle when Nina looks shocked. “But he’s…nice.”

“A very generous adjective.”

I laugh and nudge her. “He’s more than nice. I just don’t know what to do with it. I mean, I’m really starting to like him. More than I think I should because this whole thing is going to end soon.”

“Yeah, that’s a pity. But if you’re serious about each other, can’t you figure something out? Maybe you can move here.”

I shake my head. “I want to start my company. Better do it at home, where I know what I have and have a clientele that already knows my name. And he won’t move to LA because of the team, obviously.”

“Right.”

“I don’t know what to do. Maybe I’m overthinking the whole thing, seeing something bigger when it’s just supposed to be a fling. I think I’m desperate to have a happy ending, you know?”
