I shake off the thoughts. I’m not going there. Brett didn’t like me, and he’s still a pain in my ass, although we’ve both grown up. Noah isn’t in the picture anymore, which was his choice, and there’s nothing else to think about.

“Almost all the guests have arrived by now,” Nina says, and I’m glad about the topic change.

“Everyone’s here that matters. Laura and I talked about that last night. It looks like she’s starting to calm down a little.”

“That’s good. Stacey needs the break.”

“Yeah, it’s only a few of her and Marc’s friends still outstanding. And the last groomsman. He’s flying in the day before.”

“Who is he?”

“I don’t know,” I say with a shrug. “The guest lists and seating charts still say Luke’s name.”

“Luke?”

“Another guy on Marc’s team, Luke Brennan. He canceled last minute and Marc asked someone else. But Marc keeps telling me everything will be fine; everything is taken care of. And if Marc has it under control, then it will work out.”

“Maybe he’ll be hot,” Nina muses.

I laugh. “Maybe he’ll be a footballer like the rest of them.”

“They’ll be so wide next to Marc, it will be a like a wall of meat.”

“Can I have him for the first dance, instead of Kelsey?” Nina asks.

The bridesmaids have all been paired with the groomsmen for a choreographed dance. Kelsey and Luke, Nina, and Tom, Brett and me.

I’m not nearly as unhappy as I was about dancing with Brett.

“I’m sure it will be fine; Tom and Kelsey seem to be hitting it off.”

Nina nods, and we walk back to the car, ready to go back to the hotel. Nina drives, and I look at the tropical island sliding by. My mind drifts to Brett and Luke and this new groomsman. It wasn’t very last minute, not really, but Laura feels anything that goes wrong is a last-minute disaster.

Whoever this new groomsman is, he better know what he’s doing by the time he arrives. Marc sent us all videos to practice while we were in different parts of the country and he said he would send the video to the groomsman, too.

If the man knows what he’s doing, it is a different story—we had a small rehearsal, with someone stepping in for Brett. Luke was there, and it worked well, and it would have been great if he could impart his skill on whoever this guy is.

But there’s only so much I can control in this wedding. I’m already doing everything I can, and for an event this big, I think I’m doing a pretty good job. I have to trust that the few things I can’t change will work out right, and hope that if it doesn’t, one of the paps isn’t looking.

When we arrive at the hotel, Brett is in the lobby. He smiles when he sees me.

“What are you doing tonight?” he asks me after he says hello and Nina excuses herself.

“I don’t have any plans yet.”

“Nothing with the girls?”

I shake my head. “We’re just taking it slow.”

Brett nods. “Want to have dinner together?”

“That would be nice,” I say with a smile.

“Okay, come to my room at eight. It’s a private dinner; we’re not coming to the restaurant.”

That surprises me.

“Okay,” I say. “What should I wear?”
