Chapter 21

Jenna

I open my eyes and stretch in bed. When I roll over, Brett’s body is warm and solid against me, and I smile.

“Morning, beautiful,” he says and pulls me closer, nuzzling my neck. “Why are you awake so early?”

“I have to take care of a few things. It’s the day before the wedding; there’s a lot to do.”

“Why is that our problem again?”

I giggle. “Because we’re the most important part of the wedding party, and I’m the coordinator. Remember?”

“I want to stay in bed all day,” Brett says. “With you.” He kisses me, and for a moment, I let him kiss me all over. My body becomes hot again, and echoes of last night’s pleasure make the warmth pool between my legs.

“Stop it,” I gasp. “Or I’ll stay here all day.”

“Hmm, I don’t think I’ll stop, then,” Brett mumbles, but he kisses me one more time on the mouth and lets me get out of bed with a pout. “We’ll just have to do it again.”

“I think that’s the best way to do it,” I say with a grin and find my clothes. I really need to leave something to wear in Brett’s room. But soon, all this will be over and we’ll be going home. In a few days’ time…

My stomach twists into a knot, but I ignore the thought. I’m not going to think about that now. Not after we had the most incredible night together.

And after the wedding, there’s still the game before Marc and Stacey leave on their honeymoon, officially ending the wedding trip.

When I’m dressed, Brett is out of bed in boxer shorts, brushing his teeth.

“Are you very busy today?” I ask.

“No, I have a full day of lazing to do. We’re off training today.”

“I’m jealous,” I say.

“And you want to make this your career.” Brett shakes his head, but he’s smiling. He’s just messing with me.

The more I think about what I want for my future, the more I know I want to be able to stand on my own two feet and build a company that’s worth being proud of. I’ve been working for The Man for years now, and it’s time for a change. It’s time I’m The Man.

“Okay, I’m out of here before I stay,” I say and give Brett a quick kiss before I rush out of his room.

I ride the elevator to the top floor. While I’m in the elevator, I go through a mental list of everything I need to get around to today. Talking to Marc is one of them, so I’m doing that first.

When I walk to Marc’s suite, his door is open a crack. I frown and hear his voice inside. I’m about to lift my fist to knock when the words float to me and I freeze.

“And you’re completely sure you can throw the game?”

My blood runs cold.

“Yeah, I’m taking care of it. I’ll send you the money when I get to the bank later today; I just need to find an excuse to slip away…no, no, you know I’m good for it.”

He’s silent again for a while. I see movement, and he steps into view, his back to me. The phone is pressed against his ear, and he looks out over the ocean.

“As long as you get it done, man,” he finally says. “You’re the one who told me we can pull this off, so you better fix the fucking game and deliver on your promise.”

He hangs up and turns. I duck out of sight. My heart beats in my throat and my mind spins with what I just heard. When there’s a sound on the other side of the door, I jump back and hurry to the elevator.

“Jenna?” Marc asks.

I freeze and turn around. My throat swells shut and I have no idea what I’ll say to him when he challenges me about eavesdropping. “Marc.” My voice is strained.
