Chapter 23

Jenna

I’m up at the crack of dawn. It’s wedding day. Soon, Stacey is going to get up and we need to start getting ready—Laura arranged a crew of hairstylists, makeup artists, and photographers to make sure we’re perfect for the day.

But before then, I have to make sure the chapel has its flowers, and the tables are being set up.

The paparazzi are everywhere. I'm alone, and they don't care about me, so when I leave the hotel, they only crane their necks until they realize it's no one important before they hurry back to the doors.

I spoke to Laura about bodyguards at the wedding, but she refused. She wants the paps there so that everything can be the way she envisioned it—splashed on the front page of every website and tabloid out there.

When I reach the little chapel, not too far away from the hotel, Kaipo and Hie are working together, putting up the flowers just as I instructed them to a while ago.

“This looks amazing, guys,” I say, studying their handiwork.

They look proud, and I look around. The chapel is incredible, the flowers bringing it to life, and it’s the most romantic thing I’ve seen.

I go back to the hotel, where the staff is already arranging centerpieces and name cards for the guests.

Everything is running smoothly so far.

When I step into the lobby, someone is talking to the receptionist, flirting so much that she giggles and it bounces off the walls. I walk past him, but he reaches out and touches my arm.

“Jenna.”

When I turn around, I look into the electric blue eyes of the boy I used to love.

“Noah?” I ask, shocked. “What…how many of my ex’s are going to appear in the lobby?”

“What?” he asks, confused.

I shake my head. “Nothing. What are you doing here?” I will him not to tell me he flew all the way here as a romantic gesture, too.

“I’m in the wedding.”

I shake my head. “You’re in…what?”

“The wedding. I’m a groomsman. I’m stepping in for Luke.”

My ears start ringing. “Are you kidding me?”

“I know, that’s what I thought when Brett told me you were here, too.”

“You talked to him about me?” I ask.

“He was the one who told me you were here. He said things are different between you guys now. I’m so happy.”

I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Seeing Noah is a blast from the past that I didn’t expect. Brett telling Noah is also something I didn’t expect, and now Noah’s telling me he’s happy for us.

“You are?” I ask.

“Of course, why wouldn’t I be? We were kids, Jen. It’s been a long time. There’s no need to hold onto the past.”

Something inside me melts a little. Brett told Noah about us. But Noah is so…calm about the whole thing. I thought he might be upset.

Unless he was as happy to get away from me as Brett was to split us up.

I shake off the thought. Even if that’s true and he didn’t feel for me what I felt for him, it’s in the past. Just as he said. And Brett and I are together—we’ll still figure out the rest—and Noah doesn’t mind.
