Chapter 24

Brett

The wedding is beautiful. I’m not one to get all emotional about shit like this—I don’t usually give a crap about relationships and what they mean. But this is different. It’s my best friend and the girl he’s been head over heels in love with for years.

And it makes me think about other things. About a future with someone. About getting serious.

When I look at Jenna next to Stacey, she looks incredible in her purple dress, and she watches the ceremony with an expression that only makes her more beautiful. I don’t know what she’s thinking. I don’t know what we are in the long run. But when they talk about love and recite their vows, she looks at me and offers me a small smile before she turns her attention back to the happy couple.

I’m glad she didn’t tell Stacey about Marc. I know she doesn’t agree with me about it keeping it quiet, but this would never have happened if she said something. And Marc and Stacey look genuinely happy, ready to spend the rest of their lives together.

I’ll talk to Marc later. I’ll get it out of him what’s going on, and I’ll tell him to stop his shit before he ruins his own life. But nothing’s going to go wrong right now. Everything is as perfect as it should be.

Behind me in the row of groomsmen, Noah clears his throat, and I glance back at him. He looks fidgety and uncomfortable. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him before we had to get ready—I hoped I could tell him about Jenna after all. But when we got ready for the wedding, and the photographers arrived, it took a lot for Noah to not look like death warmed up after he drank himself into a stupor last night.

The ceremony is finally over, and we filter out of the chapel. We’re traveling back in a limousine to the hotel where the reception will be hosted, and Marc and Stacey will follow in the other limousine when they’re ready.

Jenna comes to me when we stand outside.

I glance at Noah, who’s watching us.

“You were right,” she says softly, leaning in a little. I stiffen. If she leans in to kiss me now... “It was right not to talk to Marc. They’re so happy!”

She wants to kiss me. Her eyes slide to my lips. How can I stop her from kissing me without it coming across wrong? I’m panicking when she inches closer, but then Stacey calls her.

“Duty calls,” she says with a sparkle in her eye and turns to run to the bride and find out what she still needs.

I let out my breath, relieved that the chaos is averted.

The ride in the limousine is easier than I thought it might be. Jenna and Nina sit next to each other, gushing about the ceremony and how romantic it all was. I’m with the guys on the other side of the limo and we’re already drinking. Noah just about downs his drink.

“Easy, man,” I say.

He shakes his head. “Oh, no. The only way to get rid of a headache is to get drunk all over again. I’ll worry about the aftermath tomorrow.”

I laugh and we clink our glasses together, all of us drinking.

When we stop at the hotel, there’s a lot that needs to be done. The guests need to be ushered in and the wedding party is on duty to help them all find their seats as they arrive. Jenna makes sure everything is prepared for the married couple’s entrance, I’m talking to the DJ about the dance soundtrack, and there’s no time for anything to go wrong.

I’m relieved. The rest of the evening just needs to run smoothly, and then we’re home free. Noah will stay for the game, but it won’t be as difficult to hide Jenna from him when the wedding party breaks up and staying at the hotel becomes a normal holiday arrangement.

When it’s time for our choreographed dance, we all line up, and the music starts. I look at Jenna, and she looks incredible. She’s smiling at me as we move around, going through the steps we all learned. I love touching her, and when I spin her around and hold her close, I whisper in her ear.

“You look beautiful.”

“You clean up well, too,” she answers with a blush.

We pull apart again, and the girls do their bit before meeting up with their partners again.

When the dance is over, we dip our girls like we should.

Jenna reaches up, touches my cheek, and when I pull her up again, she grabs me and kisses me.

Everyone applauds.

I clear my throat and glance at Noah. He doesn’t look like he saw.

Damn it, why didn’t I just tell him?
