Chapter 29

Brett

She’s not at the hotel. The concierge tells me everyone has checked out.

Her phone is off, and I can’t get through to her.

I want to find Marc or Stacey, but they’re the last people who will know where Jenna is, I’m sure. Everything went to shit last night. There’s still a big mess to clear up.

But I need to find Jenna first. I’m terrified she’s already left, and then it will be too late for me to talk to her. Unless, of course, I do what Charlie did and fly around the world after her to tell her that I want a second chance. I’ll do that if I have to. But I need to know where to find her first.

My phone rings when I’m on the way to the airport.

“Noah,” I say. “I thought you left already.”

“Yeah, I’m boarding,” he says.

An awkward silence stretches between us.

“She’s not leaving just yet,” he says.

“What?”

“I just talked to her.”

“You did?”

Noah chuckles. “Don’t sound so fucking surprised. I told her how you feel about her. How you always felt about her.”

“Jesus, Noah, are you fucking serious?”

“She deserves to know, man. Besides, if she knows, she’ll get how you really feel about her now, and she might give you a shot.”

I slow at a traffic light but I’m barely focusing on the road at this point.

“Why are you doing this?” I ask. Noah and I fought; that was the last thing we did before he left. I was pretty damn sure I fucked up our friendship forever.

“Because you love her, man. It should have always been the two of you.”

I don’t know how to respond. But Noah keeps talking.

“Find her, talk to her. You still have a chance to make it right. And for God’s sake, get over yourself and do what needs to be done. If you sit there not knowing how to tell her you want to be with her this time, I’m going to get them to turn the plane around and I’ll fuck you up myself.”

I laugh, surprised at his aggressive response to my love life.

“I don’t know what to say,” I say.

“You don’t have to say anything. You were right; it’s been ten years. And I’m pretty sure I never felt about her the way you did. If we’re going to stick to the bros before hoes code, then I should have had your back all those years ago and not dated her in the first place. So, you have a hall pass on this one, and then we’re square.”

I laugh. “You’re a son of a bitch, you know that?”

“Yeah, but it takes one to know one,” he says with a laugh. “I need to go; I need to turn off my phone. But do the right thing, okay?”

“Okay.”

We end the call and I pull into the airport parking lot. I have no idea where to go to find her, but now that I know she’s here, I can find—

She crosses the parking lot almost in front of my car, and I’m pretty damn sure this is fate or destiny or one of those soppy things girls believe in that’s at play. Because no way in hell does something like this happen.
