“It’s just different with her, you know? Ever find a girl you can’t stop thinking about?”

“Maybe once,” Rooster says thoughtfully. “But that was a long time ago because I grew some brains and realized that settling down isn’t my thing.” He grins at me. “What makes her so great?”

I shrug and glance at the counter with the array of health foods to choose from. I’m not really hungry, but I consider getting something just so I have something to do with my hands. I feel weird talking about this—it’s way out of my comfort zone to care about a woman.

“It’s just not the same as with the others. With the women I usually sleep with it’s about a night of fun but come the next morning I’m done and I want them gone. With Rave…The first time we slept together, we had a spark. I ignored it because it wasn’t a good time for me.”

Back then, all I wanted to do was drink myself into a stupor, fuck, and forget the next day so that I could deal with the fact that I had to change my whole life plan moving forward.

“When I saw her again, a week ago, I felt a lot more than just a spark. But I thought she was leaving so I wasn’t going to complicate things.”

“Seems pretty damn complicated from where I’m sitting.”

“Yeah, well…she’s here. For a week, at least. She lives in Paris now.”

Rooster whistles through his teeth.

“I know, I know—it sucks fucking balls. But she’s not gone yet.”

“So, go for it, then.”

Rooster scrapes what’s left of his granola into his mouth, the bowl pressed to his lips.

I laugh. “Do women think you’re hot when you do that shit?”

“I’m not trying to impress anyone,” Rooster says with his mouth full.

I shake my head. “Do you think going for her is a good idea when I know it can only end in disaster?”

“Yeah, I do. Give it a shot. If you’re serious, it’s not like you’re nailed down to the ground over here. Plans change, people move. Love conquers all…or some shit like that.”

“You’re not very convincing when you add that at the end,” I say with a chuckle.

Rooster shrugs. “Take it or leave it, my friend.” He looks at the time. “I better get out there. The guys are coming in soon, and I’m doing to drive them into the ground today. Join at your own risk.” He smirks at me, gets up, and leaves. I stay behind alone at the table, thinking about what he said.

If I’m serious about Raven, I guess wecouldmake it work. No matter what. I’m not so sure about love conquering all, but I’m sure about what I feel when I’m around her. I want more of it.

Why the hell did she decide to go to Paris? Fuck, it’s such a damn shame.

But that’s the story of my life, isn’t it? The good shit is always just out of reach. Still, like I said to Rooster, she’s here now. And I can make the most of it if I want to.

And why the hell not? A week is not enough to fall so madly in love that when she does leave, and we don’t pursue it, I’ll be a blubbering mess with a broken heart. It’s just a week.

A week of fun. A week with Raven.

I stand and leave the cafeteria. I have work to do in my office before I join the guys on the field for a tough workout routine. I’m looking forward to it—it will help me clear my head. My subconscious can figure shit out for me while I kill off my body slowly by following Rooster’s training routines.

Mason knocks on my door when I’m working on a contract.

“Come on in,” I say to him.

He sits his large frame down in one of my chairs and waits for me to finish up and save what I’m doing. When I’m done, I look at him.

“What’s up?” I ask.

“I want to talk to you about my contract. I’m supposed to be out there in a bit, but I just want to run something by you.”

“Sure,” I say. “Let’s talk.”
