I’m also glad it’s one less person I have to hide my constant nausea from.

“Let’s get serious, though,” Michelle says. “Are you okay?”

I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Some days, I think I am. And some days, not at all. But I’m taking it one day at a time. And eventually, I will be.”

Michelle nods. “You’ve got this. And you know I’m here, right? All of us. We’re like a family here, and you’re not in this alone.”

“Thank you,” I say.

Michelle gets up and walks around her desk. She pulls me into a hug.

“Congratulations, mama,” She says while she hugs me. “I can’t wait to spoil the little bundle rotten!”

I laugh, and for the first time since I found out, a wave of excitement overcomes me.

I’m going to have a baby. And this might actually work out. It won’t be easy, but with the right people in my corner…

I can do this.

After our chat, I walk back to my office, smiling. I still have a long road to go, but I’ll get there.

Someone stands in my office, and when he turns when I walk in, it’s Mason.

“Oh, God,” I say, startled. “What are you doing here?”

“They found mom a pair of lungs,” he breathes.

“What?”

Mason nods and he looks emotional.

“She’s in recovery. The surgery went well, and she’s awake. It will take a while to see if her body accepts the new lungs, but she’s alive.”

“Oh, my God,” I say. “I’m so relieved for you.”

Mason nods. “When we found out she was going to be okay, you were the first person I wanted to tell. And then I realized…God, Natalie. I miss you.”

My eyes well with tears. It’s so good to hear him say it. If he has any idea how much I missed him…but I don’t tell him that.

“I’m sorry, Mason,” I say. “I’m so happy your mother is going to be okay. And I’m flattered you wanted to tell me. But we can’t do this. You know that, right?”

“I know, Natalie,” he says.

“I think it’s just better if we—”

“I know about the baby.”

I freeze.

“What?” I ask in a small voice, blood draining from my face. “Who told you?”

“I heard you telling Sam about it. I went to his stupid coming-out party. Dianne told me to go.”

The more he talks, the more my head spins.

“None of this makes sense. You went to Dianne?”

Mason shakes his head. “She came to me. But don’t be mad at her because she didn’t tell me anything, just that I should talk to you. And that’s what I went there to do. To talk to you. I know Sam is gay, I know you’re pregnant, and I know I was a complete dick by accusing you of cheating.”
