“Sure, you’re not the first Mason I’ve heard of.”

I don’t know what to say, so I comment on the event.

“They went all out with the décor tonight.”

“I know,” she rolls her eyes and then glances around to see if anyone saw her. “I don’t see the point spending this much money if it’s all about making money, but it’s not for me to decide, right?”

“You’ve got a point.” I smile at her and she grins back at me.

“So, next Friday night?” she asks.

I realize she means to set a date right now. I rack my brain and can’t find a reason it won’t work so I nod.

“I’ll let you decide where to take me,” she says.

“Looking forward to it,” I say automatically, and she agrees with another grin.

After she walks back to her table, I search for the guys. Darrell sits at his date’s table and it looks like he’s already in far deeper than the charity had in mind. I’m willing to bet they’ll seal the deal tonight.

Bernie stands to the side with a glass of champagne so I walk to him.

“And?” I ask. “Mrs. Right win you over?”

He groans. “I don’t think so.”

I laugh. “It’s for a good cause. You’ll be doing something nice and I bet she’ll tell her grandkids all about it.”

“You were all worked up about those shitty jokes a moment ago but fuck, I think she reallyhasgrandkids.” He rubs his forehead with his fingertips, and I chuckle.

“Sorry, man.”

“What about you?” he asks.

I shrug. “She’s nice enough. Pretty and young and she doesn’t seem full of herself. I think it could be a fun night.”

I don’t think I realized how nervous I actually was about this. I know I’m lucky I got someone I can handle. Michelle doesn’t look like she’s going to jump my bones and she’s open and agreeable. I glance at her again where she’s with her company at a table, talking and laughing. She looks like it could be a decent evening.

But nothing about her makes me come alive. She’s beautiful but I’m not attracted to her. The night with her will be pleasant, I’m sure, and perfectly two-dimensional. When we spoke, I didn’t feel any kind of spark.

Not that I was looking for one.

I flash on Natalie and the spark I felt with her. Being around her was electric. She made me come alive in a way I haven’t in a long time.

I push the thought of her away. We were both drinking and I was wired, looking for a release. That’s all. It doesn’t help looking back now and searching for something that doesn’t exist.

It doesn’t help to wonder what might have happened if I had called her back. I have too much going on, I didn’t call her, and that’s the end of it. No point turning back to wonder about what ifs now.

“Let’s get drunk,” Bernie suggests.

“I’m so down for that.” It might help my foul mood.

“We’ll only drink two or three so we don’t act like fools.”

I laugh at that. “I think Darrell is the one who should be careful.”

We both glance in his direction where he’s got his tongue down his date’s throat.

“He looks like he’s having fun.”
