“Gonna be tied up here all day.”

“Tied up? I like the sound of that.”

Not a muscle moved in his face. That kind of crafty sass passed right over his head on any given day, and especially today. He didn’t find it cute, sexy, or remotely enticing. He would much rather have a green-eyed redhead blabber chemistry facts to him over this. At least it would be genuine.

Avery must have sensed it, since she opened her car’s door. “I remember you as more fun, Jordan,” she muttered.

“I don’t think we knew each other very well, Avery. And, in any case, people change.”

“We didn’t, but we can get to know each other now. Maybe have a drink some time? Your mom said you’re staying here for the time being. She had this idea that you could judge at our Model UN at school and gave me your number.”

“She did, did she?” He should really talk to his mother about this.

Jordan put a hand on the car’s roof, and as if she took the hint, Avery climbed in.

“I thought we could discuss it,” she said. “Not every elementary school has it. And we do the real stuff, not Burgerland versus Candyland.”

“I’ll think about it. Drive safe.” He helped close the door then tapped once on the car’s roof. When she drove off, he turned toward the house and went back inside.

“Hey Luke,” he said as soon as he saw his brother in the kitchen. “About the beach house. Can I move in next week?”

“Sure.”

“Just until I figure some things out.”
