“Yes.”

They were both lost for any other words, and no other words were needed when love was deeper, vaster, and fiercer than any logic, science, or language could explain.

He kissed her again, gently this time, then leaned his forehead against hers. “When will we tell the girls?”

“By Christmas, because I want you to come with us to Minnesota.”

He rubbed his nose against hers. “Will give me a chance to get you that ring.”

She felt like she was hovering above herself, above that moment, as if her body was too small to contain all this happiness.

“Jordan.” Naomi and Hannah announced their presence as they came running in, giving them just enough time to pull back a bit. The girls had seen them kiss and hug before, but they made sure not to overdo it.

“Jordan, can you build a pool like Casey Davis has? We don’t have room in our backyard.” Naomi stopped next to them, putting her hands on his leg, still treating him like a column whenever she stood next to him.

“Casey Davis’s parents are wasting water,” Hannah reproached. “Jordan, tell Naomi you don’t want a pool. It’s a waste of water. And having a lawn does, too. I read about it in National Geographic.”

Jordan looked at Hope with a smile and raised brows, and Hope returned it, holding his gaze.

He then let go of her and crouched so he could be at level with the girls. “You know what? You both have great points. Let’s think together about a solution that will make both you and the environment happy. You’ll help me decide, okay?”

Even when he was crouching, Naomi had to rise to her toes to put her palms around his ear so she could whisper something straight into it.

“That’s not fair, Naomi,” Hannah called. “There’s a thing that’s called concession.”

“I only told him that Casey has a hot tub, too,” Naomi replied defensively.

“We’ll find a solution together, I promise,” Jordan said, looking from one to the other. “Deal?” He raised both his palms for them to high-five.

“Deal,” Hannah said first, then Naomi, both sticking their small palms to his. He then wrapped an arm around each for a little hug, patted their heads, and straightened up.

“Okay, girls, time to go home,” Hope announced, smiling at him and yearning for the day when going home would be done with him.

“Can Jordan come, too? I want to read him and Naomi the article in my National Geographic.”

They exchanged another look over the girls’ heads.

“I’ll be happy to,” he replied with a smile.

“Okay, but then straight to bed,” Hope said and nearly chuckled when she realized what it sounded like.

“Straight to bed,” he whispered into her ear while locking the front door, sending a heat wave straight into her bloodstream.

“Naomi snored before Hannah finished the first paragraph, and when she yawned, I read to her until she fell asleep,” Jordan said as he entered her bedroom, closing the door behind him.

She was sitting on the bed, still in the red dress that she had worn for dinner. “You handled it well. Even Casey Davis’s parents wouldn’t have dealt with it that well.”

He laughed as he pulled her up into his arms. “Good thing I have negotiation and mediation experience. Trust me, some of the people I dealt with weren’t as smart or caring as Naomi and Hannah.”

She laughed and started opening the buttons of his shirt. “They’ll teach you new skills.”

“They already do.” He kissed her then, leaning his weight in until they fell on the bed and began stripping each other.

“I was told once we’re not compatible. I don’t know about you, but I feel we’re very compatible,” he rasped when he was inside her.

“Experimenting proved my hypothesis wrong,” she whispered then pressed her lips to his in a deep, scorching kiss.

The End
