“Avery, stop it! No one went behind your back, and no one wanted what you had. You know perfectly well that you and I were never … We got along for Max.” Even that was stretching the truth.

“It doesn’t give you the right to go and fuck my cousin, my own flesh and blood.”

He nearly laughed. “Now she’s your flesh and blood? Where has that sentiment been all your life? Avery, come on; you know better than that.” Maybe she could be reasonable once she relaxed. After all, she didn’t deny his description of their marriage. She couldn’t, because they both knew exactly what sham of a marriage it had been.

“Oh, I know better than that. We’ll see who gets screwed now! Happy holidays, Jane.” Avery spat the name with such hatred that he couldn’t believe that Max was somehow tied to her. She then turned around and bumped her shoulder against Jane while storming out.

The sound of the door slamming and the absolute silence that ensued were probably what the end of the world sounded like.

Jane was pale, even her lips were almost white. He approached her and wrapped her in his arms.

“Oh my God,” she mumbled, her breath against his shoulder. Her lemony smell was his only comfort at that moment. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

“Jane, I have to go after her before she breaks this to Max in the worst possible way.”

“She’s going to ruin everything—Max, my mother, Darian, Ferna—” She halted and grabbed his forearm. “Finn, don’t let them know about then, about everything that happened then. It will only make things ten times worse.”

“I won’t.” He held her by her shoulders, pressing her to the wall. He took a deep breath then released it slowly so that she’d breathe with him. She did.

“I’m so, so sorry, Finn,” she said, pushing him with her palms on his chest. “Go before she—”

“It’s not your fault, baby. It’s mine. From start to finish.”
