“Jenny, this is Zachary.”

She turned to him. “This is Jenny. She’s one of my best friends.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Zachary said.

“We’ll talk later,” Anna said to her friend.

Jenny grinned. “Okay. Bye.”

Anna set both shakes on the table.

“What are those?” he asked.

“Shakes. They make good ones here. I got a strawberry and chocolate. If you don’t like either, I can get something else.”

“I love both. How about we share them,” Zachary said.

Anna smiled and started eating her sandwich. She was happy to see he had an appetite, and she promised to get him to eat as much as possible and make healthy food for him.

She was throwing away the wrappers when the doctor came in. She liked him, and he’d always been nice to her.

“I’ve got the X-ray back. I’m pleased to say you’re healing very well. If you keep it going and not get impatient and put stress on it, you’ll be out of the cast in a few weeks.”

“That’s great to hear,” Zachary said. “What does that mean for going home?”

“It’s already late afternoon, and I still need to see that you can walk on your own and go to the bathroom. We’ll see how you do right now, but I want to keep you tonight and maybe tomorrow, depending on how strong you are. I’ll then take off some bandages in the morning before we send you home if you’re ready.”

“Sounds good. Thanks, Doc.”

“Since you have someone to take care of you, I know you’re in good hands.” The doctor smiled at her. “Anna will be missed. She’s always cheerful and makes people feel good. You’re lucky.”

“I know that,” Zachary said, making her blush.

“I’d like to get you up on your feet right now. How does that sound?”

Zachary nodded.

“I’ll have Thomas come in. He’s our big guy, and he can be beside you.”

“I’d appreciate that.”

The doctor left before she turned to face him. “Are you sure you’re ready?”

He smiled. “Yes, honey. Help me sit up.”

She came around the bed and helped him to sit on the side. “How is that?”

“Good. I’m not dizzy at all.”

The door opened, and Thomas came in.

“I hear I get to go for a walk?” Thomas said.

Zachary laughed. “Yes. We’ll see how it goes.”

Anna pulled some hospital socks on him while Thomas got the wheelchair and crutches ready.

“What’s that for?” Zachary pointed to the wheelchair.
