“I know. I’m healed. I’ve been putting weight on my leg, and there’s no pain or discomfort. I’ve always healed fast.”

“Why are you in a rush?”

He cupped her face and brought it inches from his. “Because when I’m free of this cast, I’m bringing you home and making you mine.”

“Oh,” she sighed.

“Are you ready for that?” he asked.

“I’ve been ready.”

He pulled her down over his chest and cuddled her for the longest time. He realized he hadn’t been this happy in his whole life. Goddamn, he was keeping her, and no one would take her away.

Chapter Sixteen

The next day, Zachary and Anna walked out of the hospital with their arms around each other.

“How does it feel?” she asked.

“Like freedom.” He grinned.

“Are we going home?”

“Yes, unless there’s something you want to do.”

“No, I want to go home.”

He stopped them, tilted her head up, and kissed her passionately, but his phone vibrated in his pocket. “Let’s get to the car before I answer this.”

He got them into the car and pulled his phone out.

“Hey, it’s me,” Travis said. “We’ve got some chatter with your name in it.”

He tensed. “What are they saying?”

“Do you know a guy named Tommy?” Travis asked.

Zachary wiped a hand down his face. “Yeah, he’s the punk who gave us the information in the first place. What does he have to do with it?”

“The chatter says they want to find the person who Tommy helped, which is you. They don’t have your name yet.”

“If they get to Tommy, they’ll make him talk. The man’s a weasel.”

“No, his body washed up at a lake not far from here. He’d been tortured, so I’d guess he’s already given you up.”

“Fuck. Listen, I need to get her home. We’re at the hospital right now. I’ll call you back.”

“Okay. Watch your back.”

“I will.”

He put his phone down, turned on the car, and pulled out of the parking lot.

“What’s going on?” Anna asked.

“We’re not sure yet, but it looks like the bad guys might be looking for me.”

“How?”
