“I hate this, but you should probably go. I’ll talk to your dad bright and early. Now let’s get you cleaned up. You’re kind of a mess.” Silas chuckled and got out of bed. As he walked to the bathroom, there was a knock on the door.

We both froze, looking at each other. They knocked again.

“Silas, it’s Dale. Are you okay? I wanted to check on you since you seemed off today and left dinner early. I saw your light on, so I thought I’d knock.”

“Fuck,” I mouthed to Silas.

“I’m feeling much better, Dale, thanks for checking. You can head back to your cabin,” Silas called out.

I slipped from the bed, trying not to make a sound. I found my dress and went into the bathroom in case my dad wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“Ok, well, if you need anything, just call.”

We stood still for what seemed like minutes, making sure he was gone. The only problem was, he would beat me back to our cabin. How was I going to explain where I had been?

“We are fucked, little girl, and not in a good way.”

I nodded. Truer words had never been spoken.

MARLEY

Icould try to hurry and beat Dad back to the cabin or I could wait it out and hope he was asleep, telling him I’d met up with Vince later.

I didn’t want to get his hopes up about Vince though. It was bad enough I was lying to him about a relationship with his best friend, I didn’t want to lie about Vince too.

I had gotten cleaned up and dressed. When I came out of the bathroom, Silas had on some shorts and he pulled me against him. I took a deep breath and let him hold me. His hug made everything feel like it was going to be okay.

“Don’t worry, Marley. I’ll soon talk to him and then we can stop this nonsense.” He kissed the top of my head.

“What if he says I can’t and hates me?” I sniffled.

“Well, little girl, you are twenty-one years old. He can’t really tell you what to do. I also know he could never hate you.” Silas smoothed my hair.

“What if he hates you?” I asked quietly. I would hate it if Silas had to choose between me and his best friend.

“He might hate me. Especially at first. But then he’ll come around I hope. Marley, I’m not going to lose you now that I found you. If he hates me for telling him I love you and intend on marrying you, he’s going to hate me. Even if we’d break up, I doubt he’d suddenly forgive me.” He pulled back and cupped my cheeks in his hands. “I love you, little girl. You’re mine. Forever.”

I smiled in relief. “I’m going to go back to my cabin.”

“Want me to come along?”

I shook my head. “You need one more night of rest before you have to face him.”

He chuckled. “I’m not scared of your dad, Marley. I don’t want him to hurt you. If anything, that’s what I’m most worried about. I’m worried about you and how it will affect your relationship with him.”

Silas kissed my forehead. “Now go. I’ll see you at breakfast. Then I’ll talk to him.”

I nodded and left his cabin. I got about halfway back to the cabin I shared with my dad when I heard him call my name from behind me.

“Did you just leave Silas’s cabin, Marley?”

“A simple hello would be nice, Dad.” My heart was pounding in my chest. We were now found out.

“Did you?” Dad paused. “Don’t lie to me, Marley. I’ve had some suspicions about you two, especially when I got back. I’m not dumb. I see the way you look at each other.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “I heard voices after he told me he was fine. I heardyourvoice, Marley. So I waited. I saw you leave.”

“Daddy, I love him.” My hands were shaking now and I didn’t know what else to say. “He loves me.”
