Page 27 of Hell's Reaper

My eyes scan one of the guys that is with Desi. He looks like he’s calculating something until finally, he reaches for me.

Ledger tenses, but I’m ready. I kick upwards, balling my fist for protection. My boots connect with his jaw, drawing spit from his mouth. Before I can even think, the other two attack. Desi launches himself at Ledger. I punch out at the other guy, he dodges, grabbing my throat.

My jaw clenches.

Hurt him… the voice in my head whispers so lightly, it feels like wind blowing through my head.

I hook my thumb between the web of his thumb and index finger and yank my head back. My world spins at the movement, but I recover quickly.

A fist punches theother reaper rushing at me, and I see Ledger paying attention. My eyes lock onto his body for a split second. His muscles move with each movement he makes and each one looks more calculated than the other.

Khazon is lucky to have a hellhound that fights this skillfully.

Crack!

My head whips backward from a hard punch to my jaw. My ass hits the ground, and I taste iron on my tongue.

Ledger’s red eyes connect with mine, and for a moment, I forget about the fight. His shoulders are heaving, and his jaw is tightening with each harsh breath. Rage fills his eyes, and he looks at the guy who hit me.

I let out air that I was holding, and I look at Desi, whose eyes widen and lock on Ledger.

“Ledger, I’m fine,” I say, but my words are muffled because of the pain radiating to the left side of my jaw.

Ledger grabs the guy and, in a flash, punches him hard. We all freeze, and I am in horror, watching.

Thud! Thud!

The guy is on the ground now and Ledger is punching him repeatedly. My eyes widen as blood sprays against the pavement.

I glance at Desi to tell him to stop Ledger as if he can, but the other reapers are gone. They left their friend behind.

Crack!

The sickening noise of something cracking in the guy’s body makes me jump to my feet. I grab Ledger’s shoulders and pull, but he doesn’t budge. Ledger’s eyes are trained on where his fists are flying.

“Ledger!” I call, but his body is too strong to hold back.

Blood sprays all over us with every blow. His muscles strain, and I watch it. The guy doesn’t even look like himself anymore.

I grab Ledger’s jaw and yank his face to mine. His movement, thank the devil, stops. Our eyes lock.

“Let’s go before someone finds us.”

His jaw twitches.

“You won. Let’s go.”

His face softens, and he whispers, “This isn’t about winning. He hurt you.”

My eyes scan his face. I see the fury in him and feel the heat of it against my palm. Blood splatter covers his face, and still, my eyes drop to his lips, wondering what he tastes like. I’ve never had a man so willing to get thrown into jail for me. I’ve never had a man defend me. I’ve never felt this safe around someone. He’d do anything to protect me without even really knowing me. “Why?”

“Why what?” Ledger whispers, standing.

“Why would you do this? Why would you be so fucking stupid?” I can’t help the anger that rises inside of me, but I didn’t fully understand it.

“Asura.” He groans, reaching for me.

I push away, moving from him. I half expect him to stay behind and beat the fuck out the guy more, but instead, he follows. It makes me walk faster and further away from him.
